The Associate Director, Editorial leads a team of 4–6 Editorial Managers and oversees the creation, quality assurance, and delivery of content to a portfolio of Skyword’s diverse clients. Additionally, the Associate Director, Editorial implements Skyword's editorial best practices consistently across the team, provides logistical support to the broader department, and serves as a coach and mentor to their team to promote ongoing professional development.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of Editorial Managers to support the timely delivery of high-quality content to clients
  • Contribute to a nurturing and empowering work environment by providing ongoing leadership and support
  • Ensure the team meets daily, weekly, and monthly content delivery goals
  • Provide team and client status updates to senior management
  • Support the professional growth and development of team members
  • Lead regular one-on-one and team meetings
  • Work with editorial leadership to monitor and manage the workload of each team member
  • Act as advisor to Editorial Managers and provide coaching on editorial best practices, writer recruitment, time management, and communication as needed
  • Occasional domestic travel to our DC and Pittsburg office or specific event as needed.

Editorial Strategy and Digital Publishing

  • Act as an expert editorial consultant in client strategy discussions
  • Implement, maintain, and evaluate editorial strategies for assigned accounts
  • Advise the team on editorial planning, contributor selection, topic development, and brand guidelines
  • Educate the team on strong storytelling techniques and how to approach brand stories 
  • Review and edit content as necessary, especially content for new accounts

Operations and Execution

  • Provide oversight to Editorial Managers to ensure timely tracking and delivery of quality edited content to clients
  • Coach team and provide regular performance evaluations to all direct reports
  • Identify employee growth areas and work with L&D to recommend and implement appropriate training opportunities
  • Support Human Resources in the hiring process through candidate identification and interviewing
  • Contribute to management roundtable discussions and editorial leadership check-ins


Leadership and Collaboration

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal leadership
  • Resolve high-level editorial issues and develop relevant and actionable plans and recommendations
  • Provide feedback on account health and editorial effort to senior leadership as needed
  • Work with editorial managers to efficiently manage their pool of freelance contributors and provide guidance on writer vetting and recruitment
  • Help their team facilitate and maintain positive feedback loops between internal content creation partners



  • A Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field
  • 8+ years of professional editing and editorial management experience
  • Expert level proficiency in Chicago Manual of Style and The AP Stylebook
  • Experience managing, developing, nurturing, and inspiring staff 
  • Excellent communication and editing skills and an exceptional eye for detail
  • Experience creating and assessing strong digital content
  • Expertise in digital publishing best practices (including writing for SEO, basics of HTML, and familiarity with various CMS platforms)
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate, and maintain a brand’s voice
  • Experience offering editorial advice and feedback to clients and creatives
  • Ability to keep yourself and others on task and organized
  • Desire to be a team player and work with all departments of Skyword
  • Skills as a natural and powerful storyteller
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks on a deadline
  • A history of developing strong professional relationships with freelance contributors, clients, and partners
  • Experience acclimating quickly to new tools and software
