BBC News is recruiting an Online News Editor to join the expanding digital team in our Washington bureau.

  • When a presidential tweetstorm hits, can you separate the news line from the noise, and explain what really matters to a global audience?
  • When news of a mass shooting breaks, can you verify the facts and still get the story out before everyone else?
  • Are you curious about the cultural trends and conversations happening beyond the traditional news agenda?
  • Do you understand how to use web and social analytics and SEO to connect with audiences?

If that sounds like you, we want to hear from you.

JOB DESCRIPTION

You will lead and support a team reporting on the most significant news from the US and Canada, notably the 2020 election campaign, for our website (bbc.com/news) and app. You will also help curate the front page of the North American edition of the website.

In line with the BBC’s reputation for accurate and impartial reporting, you will have excellent writing skills, proven editorial judgement and a track record of generating original journalism.

You will be expected to sub-edit and publish news, explainers, analysis pieces and features in text and video formats.

In the fast-moving world of digital journalism, you will have creative ideas about improving the BBC’s live coverage of breaking stories, and how we can use social media both as a source for news and as a tool to broaden and engage our audience.

You will need to be able to explain the world to a US audience, and reflect the different perspectives of American and international audiences.

In a dynamic multi-media newsroom, you will work with colleagues from other platforms - TV, radio and the BBC’s many language services - to make their journalism work for digital audiences.

This role will require you to inspire and manage a small team, as well as build relationships with people at all levels of the BBC.

BBC NEWS

BBC News has the greatest reach of any news organisation in the world, including a digital audience in North America of tens of millions every month.

The BBC is committed to diversity, inclusion and equality of opportunity in the workplace. Our mission demands it. The more diverse our content and workforce are, the better we can reflect our audience.

WHAT NEXT?

If you feel you meet most of the criteria, please consider applying.

Send us your resume as well as a short cover letter outlining one US story you think the BBC should cover. Tell us:

  • Why the story would appeal to both our North American and global audiences
  • How your digital treatment would be engaging and shareable on mobile
