SUMMARY:

The Contracts Associate will be responsible for drafting/negotiating author agreements pertaining to the Perseus Books publishing division imprints (including: Basic Books, Seal Press, PublicAffairs, Hachette Books and Da Capo Press), assisting in drafting/negotiating associated amendments to author agreements, reviewing work of the Contracts Coordinator and Contracts Assistant, as well as providing support to the Sr. Contracts Manager. This job is ideal for an experienced contracts professional who has experience in both drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts; the successful candidate will have a good grasp of the business and financial models applicable to publishing deals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviewing and approving deal memos and advising editors and publishers on offers/auctions
  • Drafting and negotiating a range of author agreements and amendments with a very high level of independence
  • Reviewing and checking the work of the Contracts Coordinator and Contracts Assistant
  • Providing assistance and support for subsidiary rights drafters and negotiators
  • Responsible for updating Contracts Workflows Tracking contracts data to submit for quarterly reporting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • 2-4 years of experience (in a publishing company or with a literary agent) preferred
  • Excellent computer skills are required (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, databases)
  • Highly organized, good at prioritizing and adaptable
  • Attentive to detail with ability and interest in legal documents
  • Self-starter, able to take ownership of job responsibilities and manage work time efficiently
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
