Assistant Director of Programming, PBS Digital Studios

PBS Digital Studios focuses on developing original online series and content strategies that position PBS as a leading global source of entertaining and enlightening video content, in support of the PBS vision of being the most trusted, valued and supported media organization in America. The 20+ ongoing PBS Digital Studios series — including Physics GirlSay It LoudIt’s Okay to be SmartCrash Course and Eons, among others — receive approximately 50 million average views per month, and have amassed two billion views on YouTube to date.


The Assistant Director of Programming assists the Digital Studios team in managing day to day editorial and audience development activities for Digital Studios shows and channels on YouTube, Facebook, IGTV, podcasts and other platforms. The incumbent supports the team in developing new digital-first content and sharing knowledge about digital production and audience development strategies throughout the PBS system.


Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with Director of Programming and other staff to execute editorial responsibilities for PBS Digital Studios series including:
    • Review rough cuts and offer feedback to producers
    • Work with PBS stations, production companies and other partners to develop new digital-first series concepts
    • Work with PBSDS creators on their platform-specific strategies, especially on YouTube
    • Oversee the network-wide editorial calendar
    • Monitor and manage digital rights claims and disputes
    • Help coordinate cross program collaborations and network-wide promotions (including PBS broadcast tie-ins and new series announcements)
  • Experiment with new digital platforms and emerging formats beyond YouTube, including (but not limited to) podcasts, OTT, VR, IGTV, stories and others
  • Work with the team to develop editorial best practices and tutorials that assist in content and audience development at the national and local level, including through presentations at PBS meetings and digital media conferences
  • Coordinate and execute fan events such as meet ups, conference panels and exhibitions
  • Work with Director of Programming and the audience development lead to grow new audiences for specific shows and the PBSDS network
  • Track analytics for episodes, series and across the network

Requirements for success:

  • 4 years professional experience working for media organizations or nationally recognized brand(s) via digital media initiatives (content development, social media, communications, etc.)
  • 3 years of experience working with a digital team (content creation, online publishing, or social media)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Film Studies, Journalism, Liberal Arts, STEM subjects, Communications or related fields
  • Experience producing digital video and building audiences around educational or fact-based content, especially on YouTube
  • Demonstrated skills and passion for creating online video content that educates, entertains and inspires
  • Experience as a YouTube creator a major plus
  • Ability to deliver thoughtful, actionable feedback for video content, scripts and series concepts
  • Must be a frequent consumer of educational content across different platforms, especially YouTube and podcasts
  • Must be familiar with PBSDS' series, video approach and style
  • Knowledge of audience development techniques for YouTube, Facebook and other online video platforms
  • Demonstrated video production skills
  • Ability to cover sensitive or controversial topics with nuance and editorial integrity
  • Familiarity with a variety of social platforms and their audiences
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Experience writing for online video preferred
  • Graphic design skills are a plus
  • Experience in public media is a plus
  • Ability to thrive in an independent work environment  
  • Positive attitude and superb organizational skills
  • Willingness to take on new roles, share ideas, and perform other duties as assigned
  • Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively within teams
