Job overview:

The assistant politics and policy editor will help edit the many politics and policy stories that Texas Monthly publishes, with a focus on our online coverage.

Your primary duty will be making TexasMonthly.com a vibrant destination for coverage of the wild world of Texas politics and policy. TM is highly responsive to news and events of interest to Texans, but we don’t cover those developments in the manner of a newspaper or wire service. Our stories sort out what the latest developments mean, explore angles others have overlooked, and bring to life vivid characters and scenes.

Ideal candidates should be digitally fluent, literary-minded journalists who can juggle multiple assignments while maintaining high standards. Duties will run from story ideation and development to line-editing and SEO. Some writing may also be required. We employ both full-time writers and freelancers, so you will be expected to cultivate a reliable and diverse stable of writing talent. You will be expected to meet deadlines (and help others do the same).

This position will report directly to the politics and policy editor.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Editing both quick-turn daily pieces and in-depth features for the web
  • Curating quality story ideas and shepherding them from infancy to production
  • Making freelance assignments and grooming new freelance talent
  • Crafting headlines and deks and other display type, for an array of platforms, with an eye to SEO and social media.
  • Staying abreast of developments in Texas politics and policy, including political campaigns, criminal justice, the environment, education, and immigration.

Successful candidates will possess the following skills/abilities:

  • Great facility with language, not only when editing stories but also when communicating with fellow staffers
  • Enthusiasm for digital storytelling and making use of modern web tools to do so
  • A nose for good narratives and the ability to execute them to their fullest potential
  • Precise, grammatically minded line-editing chops
  • An appreciation for deadlines
  • A love of Texas politics, warts and all
  • Investigative reporting skills

Education/Experience:

  • Minimum one to three years' experience editing preferred.
  • Applicants should have, or be able to swiftly develop, an intimate knowledge of Texas—its past, its present, and, above all else, the opportunities it offers for great storytelling.

Application Process:

If you are a qualified candidate, please email a cover letter and resume to resumes@texasmonthly.com with the job title in the subject line.

NO PHONE CALLS OR WALK-INS ACCEPTED. TEXAS MONTHLY IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
