Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced news photo editor to join its team in New York.

What the position is:

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and fast-paced team of photo editors. The position will focus largely on the daily print editions—and will require a broad connection to content coming from numerous desks - from U.S. News and politics, to international news, to The Wall Street Journal’s core areas of business, career, and financial reporting.

Who we are looking for:

A photo editor with great range, experience and journalistic integrity who will work with section photo editors and the print desk team, curating the strongest images of our assigned and newswire edits for daily print layouts. You must be able to perform quick and strong research on breaking news and enterprise stories and collaborate with the print desk editors and art directors in a fast-moving environment. You will participate in several daily production and content meetings, pitch ideas for display and maintain a strong connection to the assigning news photo editors in the department. You will also work on special sections and other newsroom projects. A qualified candidate has at least 5 years in a photo editing role and experience on a print newspaper or news magazine.

Daily tasks:

  • Edit and produce visual assets for print news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop.

  • Pitch visually innovative and original approaches to stories, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.

  • Collaborate with the print desk teams on daily and weekly planning and coverage.

There will be plenty of opportunity to work on digital platforms also, in order to maintain strong digital skills.

Skills needed:

  • An enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgement.

  • A self-starter who can work independently as well as with a team.

  • Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities.

  • Proven deep research skills.

  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

  • Experience with news gathering and research tools including Storyful, Factiva, Google Earth and DigitalGlobe.

This is a full time Sunday to Thursday position. Hours will be 11:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
