Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a visionary R&D Chief to lead a growing team of talented data scientists and engineers building new kinds of editorial tools and projects.

The R&D team leverages data science, machine learning and other forms of computational journalism to report stories, power emerging news experiences and support other journalists across the newsroom. The team is a lively, close-knit community that works collaboratively and creatively to power new kinds of journalism, scalable tools and implement new processes that improve the way the newsroom operates. This role will require both journalistic instincts and technical skills, so the ideal candidate will be passionate about the intersection of these two areas.

The team is part of the Journal’s Strategy unit, which serves as an incubator for change and experimentation in the newsroom. It consists of a handful of teams that specialize in everything from data science and new formats to reporting for young audiences and broader experimentation. The unit is integrated with the broader product, design and engineering teams and works closely with the Journal’s editor in chief.

The job reports to the Journal’s Head of Content Experiences.

You will:

  • Identify AI projects of high impact, including tool/product-related projects and research/analysis projects.

  • Work with the Project Director to define scopes of work, define deliverables, drive tool adoption and track impact after new efforts are launched.

  • Define a roadmap for the development of new ML tools and computational journalism capabilities.

  • Collaborate with editorial leaders across departments to source and prioritize scalable projects that directly address newsroom challenges.

  • Evaluate technologies and manage the process for testing and deployment of AI/machine learning models.

  • Help define implementation criteria for efforts around news automation, personalization, editorial algorithms and real-time data.

  • Communicate the team’s technical work to colleagues from different desks and bureaus, including non-technical colleagues.

  • Partner with Dow Jones technology stakeholders to implement and manage cloud infrastructure as well as other data requirements.

  • Keep a finger on the pulse of storytelling trends, technologies and platforms, continuously identifying and evaluating the usefulness of these developments to WSJ audiences.

  • Help identify data science methods, technologies or tools worth exploring for WSJ storytelling and our audiences. Determine the processes and techniques by which we could use them.

Key Attributes/Experience

  • Experience applying computational methods to journalism and managing data science/ML or technical teams.

  • Excellent news judgment and understanding of the media industry.

  • Collaborative spirit and ability to lead within an environment where resources are shared with other teams.

  • The ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people from a wide range of backgrounds is essential.
