Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.

Associate or Senior Editor, Nature Sustainability: London, Berlin, New York or Shanghai

Nature Sustainability — an interdisciplinary journal from Nature Research — publishes the most significant research across a wide spectrum of natural, social and engineering sciences on sustainability, its policy dimensions and possible solutions. A crucial part of the journal’s mission is to highlight the role of integrated research on the interface among social, environmental and technological systems, and to facilitate cross-disciplinary dialogue.

We wish to recruit a full-time editor for the journal to cover the broad engineering and technology dimensions of sustainability research — we are looking for research expertise in environmental engineering, or related disciplines, and ideally a strong background in chemistry, Earth science, and statistics. Applicants should have a PhD and strong research record in the relevant discipline and, preferably, postdoctoral or equivalent experience.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team that is shaping a leading interdisciplinary academic journal. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Editor and with three editors from the natural and social sciences. Together, the Nature Sustainability team work on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and peer review, the commissioning and editing of Review and Comment articles, and writing for the journal.

This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills, the ability to absorb and appreciate new areas of research, and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are essential. Applicants should have exceptional time management skills, they should be dynamic, outgoing and have excellent interpersonal skills. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences — willingness to travel is essential.

Nature Sustainability is part of a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy and Nature Plants. For more information on the journal, visit www.nature.com/natsustain.

The position will be based in our London office, although there is also a possibility of joining our office in Berlin, New York or Shanghai. Please state your preferred location in your application.

To apply, please send:

  1. your CV;

  2. a brief cover letter explaining your interest in the position, and indicating salary expectation;

  3. a selection of 6–8 articles from the recent scientific literature that you feel capture the various aspects of sustainability research (provide the full reference and a link to the article, and give a brief rationale for your choice);

  4. a 200-word Research Highlight on a relevant paper you select from the recent scientific literature.

Closing date: 9th December 2019
