The Senior Development Writer prepares compelling and persuasive print and multi-media content in support of the College's fundraising goals and priorities. Specifically responsible for collaborating with colleagues throughout the Advancement division and the college community to develop fundraising strategy; performing and utilizing research to gather and format information; and creating print and digital content.

  • Develop fundraising proposals, gift opportunity descriptions, concept papers, reports, and other materials for varied audiences, including individuals, corporations, and foundations, to solicit significant gifts in support of the College's fundraising goals and priorities.
  • Create communications including messaging points, feature profiles, case statements, supplemental brochures, direct mail pieces, e-newsletters, and videos; conceptualize and craft content and/or storyboards.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to conceptualize and implement Advancement division website strategy and create content.
  • Assist with messaging and coordination of communications for campaign-related events; help shape programs to most effectively deliver intended messaging (i.e., through remarks, student presentations, and on- and off-screen signage).
  • Develop deep content knowledge on a range of College academic programs and priorities, and serve as a resource on those areas for Development colleagues.
  • Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approval.
  • Maintain quality results by using and developing templates and boilerplate language; follow proposal and development writing standards including readability, consistency, and tone; and maintain proposal support databases.
  • Translate academic planning, marketing, and other College documents into fundraising-focused materials for use across varied communication platforms.
  • Draft, review and copyedit a large volume of correspondence written by colleagues, including emails, cover letters, proposals, and more.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as required.








  Education Requirements:



Minimum Level of Education Required Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism or relevant field


Position Knowledge/Skills & Abilities Requirements:


  • A minimum of 5+ years of professional writing experience
  • Must be proficient in research, interpreting and analyzing diverse data and possess the ability to work collaboratively and independently to achieve stated goals
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow up processes, able to work effectively under pressure, use independent judgement and produce a quality work product with tight time constraints
  • Must have previous experience demonstrating a proven track record of securing new funding opportunities; comprehensive knowledge of research; and the ability to distinguish and identify new funding opportunities for special programs
  • Must have superior writing and project management skills and experience
  • Ability to work under deadlines with minimal direction
  • Must have strong attention to detail, including with regards to donor and program names, grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Ability to easily communicate with a persuasive and narrative writing style as needed and to easily change writing styles to fit the audience and voice of the piece
  • Ability to organize resources, establish priorities, and advance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Must have demonstrated advanced story development and writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills
  • Ability to interview, research, and write compelling cases for support to be delivered to potential donors
  • Must have advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups
  • Must have a high level of professionalism and discretion, with the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to process information quickly and work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Must have an understanding of fundraising principles, including the nuanced differences between, and how to effectively communicate to, varied types of donors, such as individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Ability to establish measurable goals and objectives and develop and implement strategies to achieve them
  • Must have advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must have database management skills
  • Proven ability to work with colleagues and customers in a collaborative and cooperative spirit
  • Ability to work with ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse students, staff, faculty, and other constituencies
  • Ability to envision and propose new methods to perform tasks that support ET&A; take thoughtful risks; and accept new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.
  • Ability to anticipate and embrace change; demonstrate willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Working Conditions:


  • May require occasional nights and/or weekend work

Additional Experience, Skills & Abilities:


  • Preference for previous proposal writing experience in a development and/or academic setting
  • Preference for experience delivering sharp, visually appealing written documents and/or familiarity with basic design software, e.g., PhotoShop and Publisher
