Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Communications, the Editor of Barnard Magazine will be an experienced storyteller and project manager, responsible for the full production of four (4) print/digital issues of the magazine per academic year, and overseeing content strategy and execution.

The magazine is a critical marketing and communications tool that informs alumnae and current parents while building community, connections and engagement. It also serves as a portfolio for the College, elevating its public profile through online distribution channels such as Barnard.edu and related social media accounts.

The Editor is responsible for helping to bring Barnard's strategic messages and positioning to alumnae, faculty, and other members of the Barnard community, as well as to those outside the community, through the quality and vigor of its editorial material. The magazine also keeps important constituencies updated on major events and news relating to the College.

As a member of the Communications team, the Editor also will be responsible for writing and editing related content produced by the department, as needed.

Essential Duties Summary

  1. Execute the magazine's editorial vision and design in keeping with College standards and overall organizational goals and mission.
  2. Develop engaging and innovative content on deadline for all issues and formats of Barnard Magazine (four 4 issues per academic year), working closely with an in-house art director, copy editor, and production director.
  3. Work with the Associate Vice President to set and manage a yearly budget, tracking freelance editorial fees in conjunction with the art director.
  4. Partner with the production director to set and maintain a production schedule with the printer that accommodates the unique schedule demands of an academic year.
  5. Source and manage a diverse team of top-notch freelance writers and editors.
  6. Collaborate with departments and communities across the College to develop a steady stream of fresh and relevant content ideas. As a member of the department's News Team, research topics and develop story ideas for the magazine as well as supplemental digital content.
  7. Create, track, and produce-with input and assistance from the art director, freelance writers, editors, illustrators, photographers, and student interns-an editorial lineup featuring stellar content for each issue. Articles should be planned to spotlight key initiatives and important College constituencies-alumnae, faculty, students, and administrative staff-with multimedia storytelling possibilities in mind.
  8. Coordinate with Alumnae Relations on the editorial vision of the magazine, staying attuned to alumnae feedback and initiatives. Oversee and edit the magazine's Class Notes section, in collaboration with the Alumnae Relations department.
  9. Collaborate with the digital content creator to market Barnard Magazine content on social media channels, and with the media relations director to coordinate media outreach efforts where appropriate.
  10. Work with the department's director of digital products to upload each issue of the magazine, prepping from InDesign to CMS (Drupal) and making revisions as needed.
  11. Oversee and implement periodic readership polls and assessment.
  12. Connect with magazine staff at peer institutions and track content trends and best practices in higher education and alumnae magazine storytelling.
  13. Attend occasional alumnae and campus events during evening or weekend hours.
  14. Perform additional production duties and responsibilities, as needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional editorial acumen, creativity and professionalism.
  • Thorough understanding of magazine publishing. Higher education experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to conceptualize, develop, edit, and write high-quality articles/content on a variety of topics, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to identify, secure, lead, and manage multiple creative resources.
  • Ability to prioritize, set, and abide by project deadlines, as well as ensure that deadlines are met by others.
  • Excellent organization, time-management, analytical, and problem-solving skills, along with a high degree of flexibility.
  • Ability to work in a small, collaborative team environment, present ideas persuasively, and collaborate with other Communications colleagues, as well as various departments of the College.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential material with grace and diplomacy.

Required Qualification Summary



  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred in creative writing, journalism, English, or related field.
  • Minimum 7 to 10 years of editorial experience, preferably in magazine, book, or custom publishing; an eye for photography, layout, and design is desirable.
  • Fluency in standard content, productivity and design applications, including Microsoft Office, InCopy, Google docs/sheets. Proficiency in InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and CMS /web publishing preferred.
  • Ability to work outside standard business hours, when required.
  • Experience working with higher education institutions preferred; an understanding and appreciation of academic/higher education culture and storytelling is required to be successful in this position.
