NBC News is looking for an experienced mobile editor to join its platforms team in New York City. The editor will curate the NBC News app, write breaking news alerts for app and email, and contribute to daily and long-term app curation and alert strategy. Although the editor will be focused on the NBC News app, they will be part of a larger platforms team and will also contribute to the curation of NBCNews.com and MSNBC.com.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in mobile trends, and have experience curating a mobile app and sending news alerts for a major news organization. The editor will be a talented headline writer, have a keen interest in analytics and SEO, and have a sharp eye for what resonates with a mobile audience. This position requires strong news judgment and an understanding of what drives audiences to click on stories and watch video on mobile. They need to be a breaking news junkie, and love getting enterprise journalism in front of as many eyes as possible.

This position requires the ability to make decisions under pressure and to change footing quickly and multitask when news breaks. The editor needs to show immaculate attention to detail, as well as a sense for the mix — balance, diversity and tone — of stories on our platforms. The candidate must also have the skill set of a frontline news editor: a breadth of knowledge about national and international stories, an ability to copy edit and experience with digital publishing in a content management system.

The candidate should have a minimum of four years’ experience and will report to the senior editor of NBC News Digital’s platforms team in New York.

  • Curate NBC News Digital’s app with a lively mix of breaking news, politics, enterprise reporting and video
  • Write and edit mobile alerts and breaking news emails
  • Write sharp, compelling headlines. A/B testing
  • Monitor real-time analytics to inform programming and alert strategy
  • Working with photo editors to art the app
  • Distribute and pitch stories to Apple New, Smartnews, Flipboard, etc.


  • • 4+ years’ experience working for a major news organization.
    • Prior experience editing a mobile app is a must.
    • A flare for writing eye-catching headlines and knowledge of SEO best practices
    • Proven experience displaying news judgment and finding the element of a story that will drive readers to click.
    • A broad knowledge of current affairs, including politics, social justice, international affairs, pop culture and sports.
    • Must be comfortable collaborating in a creative but demanding environment under tight deadlines
    • Must be willing to work in New York, NY
