Design Assistant – Ad Promo

We are seeking a Design Assistant with a focus on print production to join the Ad Promo department of Penguin Random House, reporting to Art Directors of Advertising & Promotions in the Viking, Penguin, Riverhead, Penguin Press, and Penguin Classics imprints of the Penguin Publishing Group. This is primarily a research and support role, working closely with designers and art directors to develop dynamic marketing materials. In addition to a wide range of tasks involving researching and submitting print orders for a variety of bespoke and traditional promotional items, this role will also be responsible for templated design projects and providing assistance to art directors and designers. This is a unique opportunity to both steer the print production for major author campaigns and assist and learn from a team of innovative designers in a fast-paced, dynamic and bookish environment.

Responsibilities include:

* Manages all print orders and proof approvals, including providing the team with timelines and tracking numbers, working closely with Art Directors and Project Manager
* Brings new options to design meetings, having regular meetings with corporate print production regarding new technologies
* Functions as studio assistant for all photography and filming; is the point person in our department for impromptu author videos and photography, works in conjunction with Art Directors
* Coordinates with marketing to photograph all new books as they are released
* Researches possibilities for new projects and for cost savings via internet vendors. Working closely with Art Directors and communicating with marketing
* Checks usability of and rights for all cover art files for all projects coming into our department, coordinating with cover art department and project manager. Maintains an ongoing grid of art rights information used by designers and marketers
* Handles templated design jobs: cover blowups, 3D book shots, back ads and, including some online ads, social media quote cards and tour cards
* Organizes and maintains physical studio and storage space

* Design training with a strong interest in print production
* Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, as well as project management software a plus
* Familiarity with DSLR Photography and lighting techniques for still photography
* Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to talk with other departments and outside vendors
* Project management and workflow skills
* Ability to work well under pressure
* Strong interest in books a plus
