The Sr. instructional designer’s main role is researching, designing, and developing content for online and face-to-face professional learning to support K-12 teachers and delivered by the Literacy Solutions team of consultants at HMH. This person is responsible for developing content that meets identified learning outcomes. To achieve this, this person will have knowledge and expertise in key discipline areas and experience designing learning experiences that align with adult learning theory. In addition, this person must be able to work with a high level of independence as well as the ability to work collaboratively within and across teams to build content knowledge, as well as facilitate review and incorporate feedback.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Management
•Manage multiple project deliverables simultaneously and successfully bring multiple deliverables in on time and within budget
•Improve and enhance processes to track projects against budget and schedule
•Communicate project(s) status regularly with project stakeholders

Instructional Design
•Develop agenda, outcomes, and learning experiences for online and face-to-face professional learning sessions; incorporate feedback from Instructional Design colleagues; lead/initiate frequent cycles of peer review
•Develop professional learning components, e.g. Consultant Guide, Participant Learning Guide, PPT slides, Digital Content and additional resources to support  professional learning sessions
•Ensure that professional learning components in all modalities are grounded in principles of adult learning, e.g. highly engaging, relevant, and hands-on
•Synthesize and incorporate review feedback to ensure appropriate delivery methods and activity types are used to achieve learning outcomes, meet customer needs, and align with overall blended learning strategy
•Work independently, with minimal guidance on day-to-day work and with general instruction on new assignments; act as a resource for colleagues with less experience

Quality Assurance
•Follow policies, procedures and quality control protocols to ensure a consistently high standard in all deliverables (e.g., editorial accuracy and accessible design).
•Organize the delivery of materials to reviewers and synthesize feedback, creating an action plan to revise the content
•Research professional learning area of focus to build deep knowledge, identify resources, inform instructional design, and ensure content is up-to-date and research-based

Collaboration
•Leverage internal HMH expertise to ensure that professional learning content is accurate, relevant, and aligns with company messaging
•Collaborate with appropriate internal stakeholders and subject-matter experts to meet Services goals
•Provide guidance and feedback to more junior members of Instructional Design team as appropriate

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor’s degree or higher

Minimum 4 years’ prior experience in writing, editing, and instructional design, preferably related to K–12 education

Minimum 3 years’ teaching experience (elementary or middle school, literacy focus) highly preferred

Experience leading and/or designing professional learning for teachers highly desired

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Experience working in a fast-paced environment and delivering high-quality projects in a timely manner

Exceptional writing and editing skills with a focus on clear and concise writing style.

Ability to multi-task, flexibly prioritize projects, and respond to feedback

Knowledge of instructional pedagogy in literacy-based subjects

Knowledge of adult learning theory

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel

Capable of learning new processes and technologies quickly

Physical Requirements

Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing) for 4+ hours.

The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.

Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time.
