Ocean Conservancy, Director of Internal Communications

Ocean Conservancy envisions a healthier ocean protected by a more just world. We work to protect the ocean from today’s greatest global challenges. Together with our partners, we create evidence-based solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.

The Director of Internal Communications is a high-level staff member leading the strategic planning, execution, and content creation for excellent internal communications. With ocean Conservancy going through tremendous growth and change, this newly created position is a high priority for the organization. The Director will establish a flexible framework for internal communications, help identify annual communications priorities, and support the development of a shared internal vision that advances organizational unity and creates an environment for excellence. Reporting to the Chief Brand and Communications Officer – with a throughline to the CEO and other executive leaders – the position will also support colleagues with other institutional and internal communications activities as necessary.

  • Develop and execute an annual internal communications strategy and plan to support annual organizational priorities.
  • Ensure the CEO, Chief People and Culture Officer, Chief of Staff, and other executive leadership are well supported to deliver excellent internal communications.
  • Create and maintain an internal communications editorial calendar and process, ensuring coordination with other communications coming from the CEO and other senior leadership.
  • Leverage internal communications to support diversity, inclusion, belonging, empathy and justice, fostering a diversity of ideas and perspectives to advance Ocean Conservancy’s organizational goals and objectives.
  • Establish a system for measurement and evaluation of internal communications.
  • Manage budgets, contracts, and contractors related to internal communications.

Strong candidates will have at least seven years of professional experience, including specific experience in creating and managing streamlined and inclusive internal communications. They will have a track record of relevant communications, marketing, or branding work and a sophisticated understanding of success metrics. A growth mindset that learns from mistakes, adjusts direction, and doesn’t get bogged down in seeking ‘perfection’ is essential. Specific requirements include:

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills in English; second languages, especially Spanish, highly appreciated.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experience required in a communications-related field.
  • Experience in wide-ranging or cross-functional areas of nonprofit management, and an eagerness to learn new skills or competencies.
  • Experience in change management, budget management, and project management.
  • Exceptional collaborative and flexible leadership skills; able to facilitate work effectively across diverse teams.
  • Ability to train, develop, manage, and lead professional and support staff as spokespeople.

We encourage applicants who have a diverse level and range of relevant skills and experiences to apply. A 100% match is not required. We want to support employees’ career growth and in return, our employees help Ocean Conservancy grow into a stronger, more inclusive organization.
