JOB DESCRIPTION

The Front-End Development Lead, Mobile & CTV role offers compelling technical challenges across six different codebases and an opportunity to lead a newly defined and talented team.

This role will influence strategic engineering direction as we take Locals News to exciting spaces. FTS is looking to bridge the gap between the palm of your hand and the living room and you will be in a pole position on that effort.

As the team lead, you are responsible for the Mobile and Connected TV client development squads. You will support your team members, provide them with opportunities to develop their career, and write code alongside them. You are an expert problem solver and the go-to person to address roadblocks, conflicts, and miscommunication. You will maintain engineering quality, track team productivity, and control the pace of software development to meet business goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with developers, QA, product managers and solution engineers to plan, design, develop, test, and maintain the Mobile news apps and Connected TV (CTV) apps with the highest quality standards
  • Maintain high standards of software quality within the team by establishing best practices and habits

  • Proactively pursue sources of requirements (Product Team, QA, Solution Design, etc) to document technical details and dependencies to tee up work for the team

  • Advocate for solutions that take quality, app performance, backwards compatibility, tech debt and development resources into strict consideration

  • Maintain the health and fidelity of FTS mobile and CTV codebases by advocating for and executing code improvements and paying off technical debt

  • Provide technical leadership to teammates through peer review, coaching and mentorship

  • Prepare reports, manuals and other documentation on the status, operation and maintenance of software

  • Design, develop, and unit test applications in accordance with established standards and industry best practices

  • Package and support deployment of builds and releases

  • Assess opportunities for software and process improvements and prepare documentation to share with team members and other affected parties

  • Actively participate and prepare for sprint ceremonies, meetings, discussions, and work sessions with both the development team and engineering leadership

  • Work closely with delivery managers, product managers, solution engineers, and Fox Technology teams to manage the delivery of technical solutions from requirements analysis through design and delivery

  • Take responsibility for ensuring that risks and issues are identified and managed closely

  • Address team issues quickly and directly, particularly when it comes to personnel or non-engineering related issues

  • Work with the Director of Engineering in enabling an effective and efficient software engineering operation

  • Other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate.


 

REQUIRED: 

  • Solid working knowledge of at least two of the following mobile or CTV development programming languages: Swift 5 with SwiftUI, Java for Android development, Kotlin with Jetpack Compose, HTML/CSS/JavaScript/XML/JSON/LightningJS/KeplerJS
  • Current relevant experience developing for multiple SmartTV platforms such as tvOS, Android TV, Fire OS, Roku, Samsung, Vizio, and LG
  • Professional experience leading development teams
  • Comfortable with developer tools including Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Charles Proxy, Postman, Azure, AppCenter, TestFlight
  • Detail-oriented and strong work ethic
  • Clear and thoughtful communication
  • Thrive on collaboration

DESIRED: 

  • Have an eagerness to learn new things
  • Experience working within a mixed engineering organizations including local, remote, and vendor resources
  • Experience using agile methodologies for software development
  • Familiarity with integrating ad technology stacks, videos and live streams in a mobile or connected TV app
  • The desire to tell the local story
  • You consider phones and TVs toys to be bent to your will

Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is: $175,000.00-195,000.00 annually for California. This role is also eligible for various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
