The Role

Route Fifty is an award-winning GovExec Media publication that reports on city and state government news, issues and trends across the country. Route Fifty is seeking a Reporter to join our team. In this role, you will report on technology topics such as cybersecurity, ransomware, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies local and state officials should know about.

As Tech Reporter, you will be a driven individual who loves digging deep to uncover important stories and disseminating them to our audience of government leaders. You will have an understanding of state and/or local government issues and policymaking and a keen eye for unique government technology stories. You will also have the opportunity to write features on other topics and profiles as assigned. This position reports to Route Fifty’s Managing Editor.

GovExec staff are currently working remotely due to COVID-19. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office, but permanent remote work can be accommodated in select states.

Responsibilities:

  • Writing breaking and enterprise news stories.
  • Writing in-depth features on big trends and issues.
  • Developing key sources and leveraging them to produce original reporting.
  • Attending events and sessions in-person (when possible) and online.
  • Moderating virtual and in-person panel discussions and one-on-one interviews on occasion.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of reporting experience.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to quickly digest complicated information and produce stories on deadline.
  • Experience covering state or local government and technology issues perferred.
  • Familiarity with AP Style.
