Publisher

The Role

The Publisher will lead the Company’s business and editorial operations, hire and manage employees at multiple publications, set commercial strategy work with the Editorial Committee to implement news strategy, implement directives from the Board of Directors, and achieve specific Company objectives. The Publisher is responsible for maximizing advertising sales, increasing print and digital subscriptions, executing a digital transformation and overseeing digital and print publications and managing the company’s day-to-day business. The Publisher is accountable for providing quality news products and creating a congenial and productive workplace. The Publisher reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a growing, dynamic workplace and media business.
• Hire skilled journalists, ad salespeople, digital and production staff and front-office staff.
• Oversee business operations for Highway 29 Media, including sales, finance and accounting, circulation, and print and digital production.
• Negotiate and manage vendors, consultants, service providers including accountants, legal staff and business development teams.
• Aggressively pursue and lead business development operations with the goal of achieving full financial stability and sustainability in 3-4 years.
• Oversee Highway 29 marketing and execution for fundraising initiatives and events. 
• Communicate clearly with the Board of Directors and the community at large about Highway 29 Media’s goals, mission and overall strategy.
• Work with the Editorial Committee to assure all publications are producing quality, balanced and unbiased reporting of the communities they serve.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Passion for the free press and the role of traditional journalism in a democracy.
• A strong background in advertising, budget management and business operations.
• Record of leadership ability and impact in high-intensity, team environments.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Values-based, collaborative working style with a commitment to the highest standards of ethics and confidentiality.
• A proven track record of running a profitable, growing media business.
• Proficiency in Spanish and knowledge of Napa County and California is a benefit.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
• Experience with software including ad management systems, web publishing tools, QuickBooks and other business and production tools is a plus.
• Have 5-7 years of experience in business management and newspapers or digital publications.
• Be based in Napa County or adjacent communities or be willing to relocate.
