Position Focus:

The Jackson School of Global Affairs is looking for a creative, dynamic writer and content producer who can help us tell and share compelling stories about Yale's newest professional school across a wide range of digital and print platforms. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Writer and Communications Manager produces, curates and publishes compelling content on the school's social media channels and website, and contributes to its e-newsletters, annual report, admissions materials, and other publications.

Essential Duties:

1. Brand & Communications Strategy. Develops and executes public relations strategy, output, and performance for the department with the goal of increasing media impressions in local, national, industry-specific and alumni media. Creates communications strategy to showcase top technologies available for license. Ensures consistent look and tone for all department communications, including written content, website and social media. 2. Media Relations. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with media representatives. Identifies opportunities to work with other the departments, university publications and the Office of Public Affairs to develop and publicize stories. 3. Content Creation. Assesses the University faculty inventions and student startups for newsworthiness and create compelling news and public relations content. Creates engaging, dynamic content for the public, including press releases, blog articles, website updates, newsletter articles and social media. 4. Outreach. Manages delivery channels for newsworthy content, including updating and maintaining the department websites, social media accounts, and articles for email newsletters, and creating video, print, and on-campus events. Creates websites that embed existing content from Yale and external sites (publications related to the technology, videos featuring inventor, profile on Yale Bulletin and Calendar innovators webpage). 5. Other. Seeks out, negotiates with and recommends external organizations that can provide services that optimize both the cost and functionality of the new communications strategy. Ensures that all communications conform to the University guidelines. Hires student workers as needed to assist in producing copy. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and four years of experience in website design, production, marketing, project management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated experience developing communications for a range of media. Experience working with consultants in marketing, design, photography, or video. Strong experience with social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Skills using non-traditional media such as video, blogging and live-streamed discussions.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated excellent writing skills; ability to write for both print and online media. Demonstrated skills using online media for communications or marketing; editorial judgment and ability to work under pressure and high attention to detail.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills; ability to provide leadership and influence change. Ability to think strategically and take personal initiative. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team structure.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong ability to evaluate and solve communications needs quickly. Proven ability to manage multiple projects to deadline amidst competing priorities. Knowledge of an academic environment, needs of administration and communication preferences of faculty, students and staff.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated ability to use data about impact and efficacy to inform and adapt communication strategies. Proficiency with content-management systems including WordPress. Proven skills with graphical design suites such as Adobe Creative Suite.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience in communications in higher ed. Experience in internal communications, media relations, journalism, project mgmt, graphic design, online information architecture or content strategy. Previous experience working in international setting or in public relations, journalism, television, corporate communications or agency work. Experience using Salesforce and YaleMessage is a plus.
