Role Purpose:
Principal engineer is our most senior non-managerial technology role and is responsible for architecting and designing systems that help us to achieve our desired business outcomes.
In this role, you will serve as an expert for multiple domains in Peacock, including, but not limited to, dynamic ad insertion, video ad targeting, A/B testing, IoT-scale telemetry collection and analysis, customer identity management, and video asset metadata.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as an expert in multiple technology domains in Peacock
  • Review all proposals for new product features to determine which architectural domains will be impacted
  • Closely partner with product owners and project managers to aggressively prioritize features for a minimum viable product that can be delivered quickly while minimizing risk
  • Represent your department in multiple technical design authority committees
  • Articulate to stakeholders what information is needed in order to estimate the level of effort required to deliver new features
  • As your understanding of requirements evolves, provide increasingly precise estimates of the level of effort to deliver new features
  • Externalize and scale your knowledge with UML, flowcharts, conceptual diagrams, Confluence pages, video recordings, email, and Slack
  • Tailor the content, method, and timing of your communications based on your knowledge of a complex matrixed organization
  • Build inclusive, productive, and positive relationships across the organization
  • Identify key stakeholders and drive consensus in order to deliver new features
  • Improve delivery velocity by identifying and remediating gaps in understanding across the organization
  • Lead the design process for multiple teams building reliable, scalable, and secure microservices
  • Define functional and non-functional acceptance criteria for epics and user stories to ensure architectural requirements are implemented as intended
  • Ensure that engineers understand the architecture, and incorporate their feedback into the design
  • Lead our system capacity planning reviews
  • Be a guardian of our culture of resilient, loosely-coupled services that maintain a clear separation of concerns
  • Be a guardian of our culture of test-driven development, domain-driven design, infrastructure as code, and automation
  • Stay focused on meeting business goals while keeping things light and fun


• 12+ years hands-on experience with large-scale back-end systems supporting large numbers of users and large amounts of data
• 5+ years experience of creating architectural requirements and system designs based on desired business outcomes
• 9+ years hands-on experience as a software engineer on a team
• 5+ years hands-on experience with a variety of SQL and NoSQL databases
• 5+ years on teams using Scrum project management
• 5+ years on teams using automated unit testing
• 5+ years on teams using automated QA testing
• 5+ years on teams using continuous integration pipelines
• Knowledge of cloud design patterns used to build reliable, scalable, and secure applications
• Knowledge of event-driven and IoT architectures
• Knowledge of how container orchestration works
• Knowledge of how popular storage, compute, and platform services at AWS and GCP work
• Knowledge of how project and program management lifecycles work
• Must be willing to work in US Eastern time zone business hours
