Video Architect

This role is part of a wider technology team (Direct-to-Consumer Technology) focused on product offerings including Peacock across NBC Universal. A Video Architect provides architectural design oversight across multiple development projects working closely with Business/Product stakeholders at an early proposition stage to shape Technology’s approach to support a product/proposition.
  • To join a small team with big responsibility - shaping architecture design across the breadth of the technologies that support NBC Universal and Sky’s OTT products
  • To have a specific area of focus on video technology – core elements that underpin the success of Peacock and its unique experience
  • Evaluate challenges including but not limited to video ingestion, encoding, and playback technology. Architects will be tasked with creating roadmaps, finding solutions and providing consistent maintenance to ensure solutions remains technically sound.
  • To take the architectural design lead – driving collaboration across multiple technical and agile development teams between US and Europe – to deliver the next generation of Direct-to-Consumer world-class platforms for on-demand, linear and live content.
  • To become an acknowledged expert who can represent the capabilities of NBC Universal’s technologies in the evolution of our Direct-to-Consumer business strategy, including the evaluation of potential initiatives and their financial justification.
  • To communicate across all levels of the technology organization and to senior business stakeholders.


• 10+ years’ experience of architectural definition and direction across an estate of comparable scale and complexity
• A demonstrable faculty to know how to build a consensus as much as how to take a more direct decision, if deemed more adequate
• Proven track record of taking the lead and defending the best solution when consensus cannot be reached.
• Exceptional communications skills assisted by an aptitude to produce diagrams and design documents of executive quality
• An ability to assess the technical detail required to reach a broad diversity of stakeholders from deeply technical subject-matter-experts to non-technical business stakeholders
• A well-exercised ability to cut through complex amorphous problem-domains to isolate the key issues and provide clear, concise, and well-reasoned directions
• Ability to “look around corners” for the business, selecting solutions for the long-term strategy.
• Understands the needs of business, product, and technology. Demonstrates the ability to apply this knowledge to architectures.
• A deep background in video technology, preferably cloud-based solutions.
• An enquiring-mind with a relentless interest in wider technology trends and their pragmatic application to business challenges.
• An exercised ability to balance and compare costs and benefits of different solutions.

• Graduate degree in Computer Science, or comparable industry experience
• Industry-qualifications and specialty certifications related to video technology
• High scale / public cloud-based technology platform experience
• OTT Video delivery to diverse clients (mobile, tablet, PC, Connect TV, Games Console, STB) over varied access networks (wifi, 4/5G, DSL, Docsys, FTTH).
• Mezzanine Video Contribution Technologies (ZiXi, SRT).
• Live and VOD video encoding (H.264, HEVC/H.265, H.266)
• Video packaging and OTT streaming (DASH, HLS, CMAF)
• DRM solutions (Google Widevine, MS PlayReady, Adobe Primetime, Apple FairPlay)
• Enhanced Content Protection (Watermarking)
• CDN architecture and cloud-based deployment
• Enhanced video technologies (UHD HDR, Dolby ATMOS, client and server-side dynamic ad insertion, low latency streaming)
• HTML-5 / mobile device / smart TV / JS-based video player
• Capture and analysis of Video Quality and User Experience Metrics
• Monitoring and management of video delivery for live, linear and on-demand content
