Summary of Position
Newsday has an opening for an Editorial Writer and member of the editorial board. This job requires an experienced journalist able to select topics, produce fact-based opinions and state them clearly and engagingly. At daily board meetings, he or she should be comfortable expressing strong opinions and when necessary, challenging consensus.
The candidate should be a keen observer of Long Island – its institutions, residents and lifestyles.
Essential Duties & Functions
• Creating content for nextLI, Opinion’s digital platform.
• Assist in help our effort to build an online community to help grow readership.
• Engaging with community groups, helping to bring context to regional datasets.
• Being part of innovative approaches to reach new and underserved audiences.
• Candidates should also be comfortable providing video commentary and experienced in using social media.
• Analyze fairly and comment insightfully on a wide range of issues influencing the lives of our readers from those debated in legislatures to those discussed at home.
• Contribute to the Opinion Department’s daily newsletter, The Point, which requires having sources in the political and governmental arenas.
Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
• Bachelor’s Degree essential.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
• 5-8 years’ experience reporting and writing, preferably with a focus on commentary.
• Extensive knowledge of Long Island/New York’s politics, economic development, cultural and social issues.
• This is a hybrid position. Employees are generally required to work in the office a minimum of three (3) days per week.
Compensation
• The annual salary range for this position is $95,000 - $115,000.
