Public transportation planning organization, located in Newark, NJ, seeks editor/writer to prepare and edit publications, presentations, speeches, reports, and other written products related to NJTPA’s transportation planning activities. This includes overseeing the preparation, editing, distribution and marketing of an online magazine on transportation planning and urban affairs issues. The Editor will also assist with developing and posting information on social media and post information on the agency website. A key responsibility of this position is to translate technical information into content that is easy for the public to understand.

Essential Functions:

  • Write and edit presentations, speeches, brochures, reports, publications, press releases and other written products as needed.
  • Coordinate the agency’s social media activities. Help develop and schedule social media content, for various platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.).
  • Develop articles and other materials for general readers summarizing the content of technical reports and documents on transportation planning.
  • Serve as editor for InTransition magazine.
  • Conceive magazine's editorial content, solicit and secure photography, solicit and secure authors, edit content, perform all fact-checking, manage production and proofreading, coordinate editorial advisory board, and supervise distribution.
  • Advise and assist graphic designer on magazine art direction and graphic concepts.
  • Additional Functions:
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies for the magazine.
  • Oversee and update the magazine mailing list and website.
  • Assist with maintaining agency photo archives and work with freelance photographers
  • Assist other staff in the preparation and formatting of presentations, videos, and other electronic materials. • Assist in agency marketing and media relations activities as needed.
  • Assist with virtual and in-person public meetings and other outreach events. This includes staffing events, gathering public comments, and monitoring the chat box and screen sharing during virtual events.
  • Prerequisite Qualifications:
  • BA degree (Master’s preferred) from an accredited college.
  • Three years of experience in writing and editing publications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media and website content management.
  • Knowledge of/involvement in planning or urban affairs issues.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong writing, editing and research skills (professional writing samples required).
  • Ability to analyze complex transportation issues and interpret them for the general public.
  • Strong editorial judgment for determining appropriate topics.
  • Knowledge of magazine publishing practices and standards, both printed and electronic (web).
  • Experience in creating and publishing social media content. Social media marketing experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of website conventions and relevant software (including html).
  • Knowledge of government, development, planning, transportation and urban affairs.
  • Willingness and ability to develop detailed knowledge of transportation planning.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
