Build global content strategy and acquisitions in Academic Law, in close conjunction with Head of Acquisition and other Acquisitions Editors, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based, proactive content acquisition in line with market, customer, and Product need. OUP’s Academic Law portfolio comprises, inter alia, (comparative) constitutional law, jurisprudence and philosophy of law, history of law, US law, national security law, and sociolegal and ‘law and’ approaches.
This position will further the Press’s publishing and research services in Research Editorial, enhance the scholarly reputation of the Press, and support the Content Strategy and Acquisitions team’s goal of positioning the Press successfully to respond to market changes.
- Work with Head of Acquisition to deliver OUP’s global publishing strategy in the area of Academic Law.
- Identify and pursue publishing opportunities (subject areas, projects, series, authors) that align with agreed strategic goals, diversity and inclusion goals, and the Press’s mission
- Propose new content according to academic quality, market appeal, and financial criteria, for internal and Delegate consideration that enhances OUP’s scholarly reputation, society relationships, and delivers usage, reach, impact, and commercial return.
- Pursue and develop new publishing opportunities and open access projects across a variety of media in alignment with agreed strategic goals, diversity and inclusion goals, and the Press’s mission.
- Contribute to the content strategy for the Press’ online products offerings, with a view to enhancing scope and diversity; collaborate with Content Development to ensure the display and functionality of content meets our publishing standards; maintain relationships with external editors and scholarly societies to ensure the content meets user needs.
- Build and nurture author networks/reviewer pools, keeping OUP’s Diversity and Inclusion goals in mind.
- Communicate clearly about value of OUP offer (quality, impact, amplification, reach) to authors and other stakeholders, and support program to improve author experience and maintain OUP’s reputation among author communities.
- Guide authors in strategies to amplify content and usage.
- Negotiate standard contracts to secure competitive IP & optimize flexibility/future publishing models.
- Collaborate with Content Development to improve publishing process and optimization, contribute subject knowledge and experience to the optimization and delivery of content post-contract where required.
- Use data reporting, market research, and analysis to identify insights that help define the acquisitions strategy.
- Extensive knowledge and/or experience with academic and scholarly publishing
- Knowledge of Academic Law and experience with law schools, scholarly societies, and/or professional bodies desirable
- Proven track record of managing commissioning process and title delivery/project management
- Experience conducting market research and data analysis
- Experience of building, maintaining and utilizing networks within the publishing industry and relevant academic/professional communities
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to new systems and processes
- Experience with open access publishing and the launch and development of digital products is desirable
- Experience training and/or mentoring others desired
- Ability to work with peers and cross-functionally in a productive manner (including within the matrix management structure of the Press) towards a common purpose
- Excellent written communication as well as strong presentation, interpersonal, and verbal skills
