Billboard is hiring a Legal Reporter who will cover music lawsuits, legal battles and the dealmakers shaping the music industry. With a renowned authority among artists, fans and the industry, Billboard powers the ultimate global music destination and magazine, featuring unrivaled reporting on music news, issues and trends, and the industry’s definitive charts.

We are adding a sharp writer and intrepid reporter to our NYC newsroom who will break the legal news that matters most to the music business. The Legal Reporter will develop close relationships with music’s top lawyers and legal minds, cover key lawsuits, hearings and trials, and monitor contractual issues and copyright legislation --writing both daily news stories and bigger in-depth features on music law’s most important cases and figures.

Who you are:

  • 3-5+ years’ experience legal reporting
  • Familiar with and fascinated by the music business
  • A great communicator and well-sourced reporter
  • A clear, fast writer who can break down complicated legal matters for a broad audience
  • Passionate about breaking news
  • A resourceful researcher who can find and pull legal filings quickly and easily
  • Legal background/education a plus but not required

What you will do:

  • Use online legal research tools to track, report and analyze developments in music cases, and explain why they matter
  • Cover hearings and trials relevant to the music business
  • Break news on key music deals
  • Cover trends, disputes and developments surrounding artist contracts
  • Cultivate a wide range of legal sources
  • Write daily news stories, magazine features and a regular music law column
  • Contribute to editorial projects from power lists to special issues
