Deputy Editor, Billboard Español

Billboard, the leading entertainment brand covering music globally, is launching Billboard En Español, an all-Spanish site that will serve as a companion to Billboard.com, the ultimate global destination for music, with a renowned authority among artists, fans and the industry.

Billboard en Español will serve as an extension of Latin music coverage on Billboard –which provides the most extensive and in-depth daily coverage of Latin music in the world—and will also feature original material as well as translations of Billboard.com’s marquee music stories.

Billboard En Español is looking for a Deputy Editor to oversee daily content production on the site, ensuring high productivity, exceptional quality, and the consistent growth of traffic month over month. The Deputy Editor will report to Billboard’s VP of Latin Music and will manage and nurture a team of writers based across Latin territories. The position requires a minimum of seven years experience in a fast-paced digital newsroom; a deep knowledge of, and passion for, Latin music and the Latin music industry; a keen eye for news; and top-notch leadership and organization skills. Most important, our Deputy Editor will be excited about leading a new, unique venture and will approach it with a “get it done” attitude and gusto that will be inspiring and effective.

Who You Are:

  • 7+ years of experience reporting in an established, fast-paced media outlet, with focus on music, entertainment and business as a plus.
  • A minimum of 3+ yearsof editing experience and 3+ years of managing a content team, including writers, editors, freelancers, social media and video producers.
  • A fully bilingual (native Spanish speaker preferred) journalist who lives comfortably in between the two worlds: mainstream and Latino-centric; Spanish and English. Impeccable spoken and written Spanish is a must.
  • Possess a roll-up-your-sleeves mentality and exhibit the adaptability and resourcefulness of someone who has worked in a start-up environment where we are constantly learning how to do things bigger and better.
  • Passion and understanding of the Billboard brand and mission of delivering high-quality consumer and business news.
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about music and music business in general and Latin music in particular, with keen interest in all genres of Latin music.
  • A multi-tasker and collaborator for whom no job is too big or too small, who can work with many teams across many departments.
  • Fast, clear writer, passionate about breaking news but also capable of writing and editing in-depth, ground-breaking features.
  • Fascinated by the business of music, including the players and the money driving it behind the scenes
  • A keen understanding of all the major social media platforms, including TikTok and Instagram.
  • Flexibility with work hours that will likely involve time outside the 9-to-5 weekday hours. Off-shift work required occasionally in urgent news situations

Responsibilities:

  • The Deputy Editor will be responsible for coordinating all coverage on Billboard Español and will maintain an editorial calendar for both the short and long-term, coverage of major events such as awards shows and festivals and will plan relevant content for other important events like conferences and concerts. He or She will report to Billboard’s VP of Latin Music.
  • Create and oversee daily/weekly content for the site, including writing a minimum of 8-10 stories per week and overseeing the publication of all stories on the site (20-25 stories per week, including original content and translations).
  • Will work daily with Billboard’s VP of Latin Music in developing Billboard Español.
  • Will work daily with the Billboard Español Copy Editor/Staff Writer and other staff to ensure all published stories meet Billboard’s exacting editorial standards.
  • Will work in tandem with Billboard’s Latin team to maximize all opportunities and resources across platforms. While Billboard En Español is a stand alone vertical, it is part of Billboard and an extension of Billboard Latin.
  • Will work closely with Billboard’s video production team to cross-pollinate content and create original content as needed.
  • Will work in concert with Billboard.com’s staff as part of a synchronized team that thrives on collaboration.
  • The Deputy Editor will be extremely disciplined about SEO best practices using them and enforcing them among the team.
  • The Deputy Editor will constantly monitor Google Analytics to dissect metrics and optimize the site as a team, learning from what worked and what didn’t and implementing those lessons learned.
