Q.Digital is the media company that helps LGBTQ people get the most out of life. It reaches more than five million people each month through Queerty, LGBTQ Nation, INTO, and GayCities.

Job Description

As Q.Digital has grown in staff, traffic, and sponsorships, becoming the leader in our space, we are investing further in deeply reported, carefully crafted long-form storytelling about the major issues facing the community today. We are looking to add to our team a features editor who will work across our four major platforms alongside a team of full-time writers, editors, and contributors across the globe.

Some of these stories are sponsored by major brands such as Nissan, Chevrolet, Paramount, and San Francisco Travel. Others grow out of our regular, daily reporting and are organic to our sites. They will range from carefully researched explainers to profiles of newsmakers/influencers to investigative journalism to definitive lists that show the best of queer life. All tell the story of where our community is right now in the long march to equality, illustrated with original photography and amazing narratives of triumph, joy, and overcoming long odds–yet without ignoring the inhospitable and even violent atmosphere we often face down the block and around the globe.

A Q.Digital features editor knows the difference between a topic and a story, between an opinion and a point of view, a provocative angle, and breaking news. You’ll work with our existing staff of a dozen and multiple contributors. You’ll work alongside a marketing team to make sure these stories get the attention they deserve. You must be a solid line editor who has experience molding stories into dramatic narratives. You should be able to help reporters build compelling characters and story elements and enjoy developing writers into their full potential in a positive, kind way. It is helpful to be a font of creative ideas, and adept at developing a roster of diverse and talented freelance writers who can be called upon to handle a broad range of topics.

The position reports to Q.Digital’s editorial director.

Q.Digital is based in San Francisco, but the edit team is mostly remote and the location is flexible. Attendance at regular Zoom meetings and in-person retreats each year is required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conceiving feature stories and evaluating pitches from inhouse staff & freelance writers
  • Assigning, tracking, and editing stories on tight deadlines
  • Recruiting freelance feature writers who boast a range of voices, styles, and backgrounds
  • Participating in brainstorms with other editors, bringing original ideas, and helping fine-tune others
  • Working closely with design, copy editing, PR, and social marketing teams
  • Working with the editorial director to polish articles into award-winning magazine-style "cover" stories
  • Desired Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience with and curiosity for stories about the LGBTQ issues of the day, from profiles to hate crimes to democracy at risk to the future of equality
  • Demonstrated ability to turn feature story manuscripts into first-rate articles for a national audience
  • Excellent skills in structuring narratives and line editing
  • Have a good understanding of how to illustrate stories with original photography, embeds, charts, illustrations, and other graphics so that they stand out
  • Ability to write sharp emotional, viral headlines, subheads, pull-quotes, captions, and other elements of story building and promotion
  • What’s Next?

If you are interested in this opportunity, please send a concise cover letter with a pitch, links to writing/editing samples, and resume. Compensation is based on experience. We offer a competitive benefits package including shares in the company.
