Overview
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and collaborates with the CEO and Pwo Navigator of Voyaging to provide strategic leadership for PVS. The COOʻs role is to operationalize the organizationʻs vision, mobilize resources, assess risks, create systems, organize workflow, oversee plans, report progress and assure accountability.
The COO must:

● Possess a high tolerance for risk and uncertainty; and
● Operate in an inclusive and compassionate manner.
Primary Duties
The Chief Operating Officer is a thought partner for the CEO on strategy, alliances and operations and is directly responsible for the core functions of advancement, finance and administration. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
● Establish and oversee operating systems to ensure achievement of goals, team work, and compliance with fiduciary expectations;
● Supervise advancement, finance and administration personnel;
● Develop annual budget for CEO/board approval, ensure prudent use of resources and prepare quarterly reports of variances between actual and plan;
● Lead recruitment process for hiring human resources and collaborate in cultivating a culture of excellence that fosters the performance, growth, high morale and low turn-over of staff;
● Develop, implement and oversee a strategic plan for advancement inclusive of contributions, sponsorships, grants, membership dues and earned revenue;
● Collaborate with team in managing key relationships and developing strategic partnerships;
● Coordinate negotiation of agreements/contracts and oversee fulfillment of obligations;
● Work with legal counsel to establish and/or uphold PVS policies on liability, intellectual property, copyrights, media usage, etc.
● Analyze performance indicators, financial statements and impact reports;
● Report progress in achieving goals and impacts to the CEO and Board of Directors;
● Support the Board and its committes in the fulfillment of their governance roles; and
● Perform other duties as directed by the CEO.
Desired Skills, Qualities and Experience
The Chief Operating Officer must have the education, professional training, record of successful application of skills and lived experiences required to credibly carry out the aforementioned executive functions, within PVS’ specific context of purposes, challenges and culture. Understanding of traditional Pacific seafaring and a firm grasp of “waʻa culture” in the Pacific seafaring community is preferred.

● Effective written and oral communicator with skills to promote understanding, generate support, resolve differences and negotiate equitable terms;
● Inclusive and decisive leader able to integrate a wide variety of considerations and be decisive in the face of risk and uncertainty;
● Problem-solver with analytic skills to identify and resolve complex issues with high stakes;
● Multi-tasker able to manage a wide range of activities, stakeholders and duties;
● Results-oriented manager with skills to deliver desired outcomes; and
● Role model of organizational values.
Salary Range: $85,000 - $125,000 based on experience and skills. This position is currently funded for 4 years from date of hire. However, depending on business need and/or funding, there may be the possibility of an extension.
