Reporter: Health Desk Fellow
Shelterforce, Remote, Work from USA
Shelterforce: The Original Voice of Community Development
Salary: Contract $1000–$1500/month
Shelterforce is looking for a health desk fellow, a part-time writer to cover the intersection of social determinants of health and community development. (See our health coverage here.) Shelterforce is a 45-year-old publication covering policy, program, and theory of affordable housing and community development. Our audience includes community development practitioners, organizers, policymakers, researchers, financial organizations, and others involved in community health, revitalization, and planning.
The health fellow will work closely with Shelterforce’s publisher, editor, and managing editor to discuss story ideas and pitches and will be invited to meetings with health stakeholders. The health fellow will be responsible for reporting one (1) long-form article (approximately 2,000-2,500 words, four- to six-week turnaround) every two months as well as one (1) shorter article (approximately 1,000-1,500 words, one- to three-week turnaround) every month. Topics will primarily be assigned, but fellows will also have the opportunity to develop their own story ideas.
The successful candidate will have reporting experience, be able to produce multi-source analytic articles (as opposed to just straight news) that are well organized and accessible, and have a keen interest in both the social determinants of health and housing issues. Reporting experience in, and understanding of, health, housing, and community well-being are a plus.
This is a contract position, starting at four months, renewable for longer terms. Compensation is $1,000–$1,500 month for the duration of the contract, DOE. Remote work.
Please send your resume, cover letter including a story idea for our health desk, and three to six of your best reporting clips to firstname.lastname@example.org, with “health fellow” in the subject line. We will assign a single (paid) freelance article before committing to a contract. Deadline to apply: Feb. 5, 2021.
