About the Role 
Scientific American is at a pivotal moment and preparing to build the next generation of our entire web platform, and we're looking for a pragmatic and experienced Senior Data Engineer to design and build big ideas.
The first Senior Data Engineer will design and build the foundational technology we used to understand our audience and business.

Flexible work arrangements are available for this role.  

This will include:
* Building and maintaining large, performant databases for business and user data
* Creating scalable API REST services to integrate data back into the CMS and reader experience
* Building and maintaining pipelines connecting our own data with third-party services
* Collaborating to generate not only automated reporting from the full suite of data systems but also pipelining data so that it can be used for real-time decisioning
* The role reports into the Director of Engineering. The ideal candidate will be an experienced and business or product minded engineer capable of architecting and building ambitious new systems and platforms.


Responsibilities:
* Work with Data Analysts, Product, and stakeholders to devise practical and effective data solutions for Scientific American.
* Lead the technical effort on ambitious greenfield projects and iterate on the problem space over time.
* Work with DevOps to ensure data systems are stable and well-monitored.
* Vet vendors, and help engineering leadership decide what to build, what to buy, and how it should all fit together.
* Mentor, cross-train, and build consensus with other engineers as the team grows.
* Additional responsibilities as needed.


Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
* Demonstrable, multi-year  experience in data engineering.
* Experience maintaining web applications with high traffic levels
* Excellent technical judgement and a predilection towards simplicity and approachability.
* Experience in Python or similar languages.
* Experience implementing ETL pipelines.
* Experience working in AWS.
* Experience building greenfield projects from the early idea stages to serving critical roles in production.
* Deep understanding of common open source databases (MySQL, Postgres, etc.).
* Experience with best practices around testing, security, and privacy compliance.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable collaborating with other engineers and nontechnical stakeholders alike.
* Past experience in news media or publishing is a huge plus.
