Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is currently seeking a dynamic and creative Communications Specialist with a strong background in graphic design and multimedia content creation. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in public information, broadcasting, publications editing, and social media content creation. This role will be instrumental in effectively representing the agency and engaging with the public, news media, and stakeholders.Portfolio: Applicants are required to submit a graphic design portfolio along with their cover letter.Responsibilities include:Multimedia Content Creation: Utilize Adobe Creative Suite and/or other relevant software to produce engaging multimedia content (graphic designs and video) that effectively communicates agency messages.Public Engagement: Engage with the public across various media platforms, providing timely and informative updates on agency activities and initiatives.Website and Social Media Management: Lead the development and management of content for agency websites and social media accounts, ensuring consistency and relevance.Communication Strategy: Develop comprehensive and creative communication strategies for Transportation Demand Management (TDM) initiatives, including bus services, ridesharing, and employer outreach.Campaigns: Support all the communication initiatives for the Commuter Services division, which includes marketing campaigns and reporting on their performance.Event Planning: Plan and execute special events and ceremonies related to transportation initiatives.Collaboration: Collaborate with partner organizations to achieve shared communication objectives.Industry Awareness: Stay informed about communication best practices and trends to ensure the agency remains at the forefront of effective communication strategies.Emergency Response: Serve as essential personnel during emergencies, supporting FCDOT and Office of Public Affairs (OPA) emergency teams.Additional Duties: Perform other assigned duties as needed.Employment StandardsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hr/equivalencies-education-and-experience)(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”)Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, public administration, political science, or field related to a department's business, plus five years of progressively responsible experience in communication area of specialization or area of specialization of department represented.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree and a minimum of seven years of experience in graphic design, public information, broadcasting, or publications editing.Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite programs and other graphic design software.Experience in providing internal and external communications for government agencies or corporations.Proficiency in website development, social media management, and web content management systems.Experience in marketing transportation programs or services is desirable.Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt content for multimedia platforms.CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:Driver's license (required)NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.This position is considered essential personnel and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Work is active field duties and file maintenance.
