Data Visualization Specialist

Our client, a global leader in scientific research and communication, is seeking a

• Client: One of the world’s largest scientific organizations
• Work Authorization: US Citizens, Green Card Holders, or GC EAD only (no C2C)
• Location: Fully Remote (Must reside and work within the continental U.S.
• This is a W2 contract role (no C2C arrangements).

Data Visualization Specialist

Our client, a global leader in scientific research and communication, is seeking a Data Visualization Specialist to join their team. In this role, you will lead the creation of data-driven visualizations and interactive storytelling pieces that highlight emerging developments in the field of chemistry. You will also play a key role in building internal data visualization capabilities by establishing processes and leading training sessions for staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with C&EN’s editorial and creative teams to conceptualize and build interactive, data-driven stories focused on chemistry research, trends, and breakthroughs
• Design and edit graphics and visuals, including charts, maps, infographics, and interactive data tools.
• Partner with writers, editors, and subject matter experts to ensure scientific accuracy and clarity in all visuals.
• Refine existing visualizations to improve accuracy, readability, and accessibility.
• Source, clean, and analyze datasets from scientific journals, databases, and public repositories.
• Conduct training sessions on data visualization best practices, tools, and workflows for internal staff.
• Contribute to developing a cohesive visual style and storytelling approach for the publication.
• Ensure all visuals meet digital accessibility standards (e.g., color contrast, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility).
• Create and maintain documentation, templates, and repeatable workflows for future projects.
  
  

Required Qualifications

• Proficiency in modern web development technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Git.
• Strong data analysis skills using tools such as Python, R, SQL, or equivalent.
• Experience with data visualization tools/libraries such as D3.js, Datawrapper, Flourish, or QGIS.
• Experience working within a CMS or component-based publishing system (Adobe AEM experience is a plus).
• Ability to translate complex scientific concepts into engaging and accessible visual formats.
• Knowledge of accessibility standards in digital publishing and data visualization.
• Strong collaboration, communication, and editorial judgment skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail.
