Position Summary:The Design and Manufacturing Specialist positions provide foundationalsupport to the users of the NJIT Makerspace. The specialists are responsiblefor guiding, assisting, and educating members in the design, fabrication, andprototyping of all parts and projects. Major responsibilities include themaintenance of a safe working environment and the training of members in theuse of equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, water jets, manual andCNC metal working equipment, woodworking tools, and other equipment.
The specialists are primarily educators and are responsible for guidingmembers through design and manufacturing decisions as they relate to thephysical creation of parts and assemblies. They preform face to faceinstruction and provide engineering design and manufacturability feedback andguidance.
The specialists may also be asked to perform machinist tasks andfabricate parts and assemblies for students, researchers, and other entitieson campus as needed.
Essential Functions:-Consult, guide, and assiststudents, faculty, and staff in the design, manufacturability, andfabrication of parts and projects. Design and fabricate parts and systems forNJIT.- Coordinate and develop trainingmaterials on equipment, processes, software, and technology in theMakerspace. Train students, faculty, and staff on the use of Makerspaceresources.- Supervise use of makerspaceequipment and resources to ensure a safe working and learning environment.- Maintain, manage, and diagnoseequipment problems; perform preventative maintenance and plan for equipmentinstallation, service, and replacement.- Coordinate activities for non-NJITusers (adult training, workforce training, participation from otheruniversities and high schools).- Manage short- and long-termimprovement, maintenance, quality, and educational projects.
Prerequisite Qualifications:-A baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering or engineeringtechnology, electrical engineering or engineering technology, industrialdesign, or related fields. Strong instructional, writing, management,interpersonal, presentation, and public speaking skills.- Familiarity with andability to operate basic and advanced prototyping equipment such as manual andnumerical control metalworking equipment, electronics test and measurementequipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, water jets, metrology equipment, andwoodworking equipment.- At the university's discretion, the education and experienceprerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to thesatisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education andexperience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
