DESCRIPTION
The Editor reports directly to the Editor in Chief and is a full member ofArtforum’s senior editorial commissioning team, which collectively steers the editorial direction of the magazine across all its platforms.
The Editor is responsible for serving as primary editor for a portion of our columns and features every month, as well as top editor for select texts. Additionally, the Editor will be expected to contribute new texts (columns, features, reviews, or other content) on a regular basis.
REQUIREMENTS
The Editor is expected to be an exemplary editorandwriter, with deep knowledge of art history and contemporary art. Finely-honed editorial instincts, a flair for diplomacy, clear communication skills, an appreciation for different writerly voices/modes, an obsession with organization, punctuality with deadlines, and an ability to multi-task are imperative.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Some formal training in art history; master’s degree preferred
- Six or more years of experience editing texts
- Some record of publications on contemporary art
- Proficiency with standard business software programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Zoom; if not familiar with publishing on WordPress, must be willing to learn

DUTIES
COMMISSIONING
- Contribute ideas and feedback in weekly meetings and daily email threads with the senior editorial commissioning team
- Regularly correspond with writers to commission pieces or field pitches, communicating on details such as scope, proposed argument, word count, deadline, and fee
EDITING
- Edit columns, features, and reviews, with emphasis on improving the relevance, clarity, and incisiveness of the argument
- Collate and adjudicate additional proposed edits from the top-editors, fact checkers, and copy editors
- Communicate and negotiate any proposed edits with the writers, including final approval of texts and titles
- Top-edit other editors on a regular basis
- Top-edit all social media posts, newsletters, and video captions
WRITING
- Contribute original content (including columns, features, reviews, and other content) to our print or web platforms on a regular basis as assigned and/or pitched
AMBASSADORSHIP
- Cultivate and maintain a network of freelance writers with expertise spanning the breadth of contemporary art and culture
- Regularly attend press previews, art openings, dinners, galas, fairs, and other events on behalf of the magazine

- Appear inArtforumvideos or participate inArtforumlive panels
Typical wage range: $72k - $80k. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role.
