Warren Buffett’s Company Buying Omaha World-Herald

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway announced this afternoon that it is acquiring the Omaha World-Herald Co., which includes the flagship newspaper as well as daily newspapers across the Midwest.

The deal is somewhat remarkable as Buffett has previously said that he doesn’t believe the newspaper industry is a profitable one. He told shareholders two years ago that most newspapers face “unending losses,” the Associated Press reports.

But the Omaha World-Herald, he said, is in better shape than most newspapers. “The World-Herald delivers solid profits and is one of the best-run newspapers in America, and we are pleased to have Terry Kroeger and his team join Berkshire Hathaway,” Buffett said in a statement.

The World-Herald is the largest employee-owned paper in the U.S.

You know these job applications. TwitterShouldHireMe.com. HeyHubspot.com. And so on. Brazen Life has taken a look at three recent incidents where the jobseeker used social media to develop buzz for his or her application, and why they worked—or didn’t.

Braden Young applied for a marketing manager position at Krispy Kreme in Philly. His cover letter:


Within four hours of launching his campaign, he was contacted, and he had the job in three days.

Brazen says:
“Young was already passionate about the company he was applying to work for, which came through in his content. But most importantly, he had the skills to back up the ostentatious way he handled the job search. He articulated his qualifications in a succinct and memorable way.”

Not so for two other applicants. Bianca Cadloni’s “Hire Me Chipotle” campaign, which we covered in the past, doesn’t seem to have gotten her anywhere. ” Even with a solid website and social media efforts, I have a feeling the decision came down to experience. With two short internships under her belt and some editorial work for a niche online magazine, it’s tough to stand taller than other candidates with even two or three years of public relations experience,” writes Brazen’s Erica Moss.

Read the original piece for one more example that may or may not turn out well for the inexperienced jobseeker. But the lesson is that it might not matter how much attention you can get if your resume is thin.

Gannett Furloughs Non-Union Employees, More To Come

Gannett’s Community Publishing group and Gannett Publishing Services have announced that most employees will take a week of furlough in the first quarter of 2012, according to a memo obtained by Gannett Blog.

The furloughs have been announced for non-union employees but the company intends to ask the union to agree to similar cuts.

Some employees making below an unspecified income threshold won’t be affected, but everyone else will need to take the week, and accompanying pay cut.

The furloughs are expected to save millions, but won’t preclude further layoffs, the company said in a FAQ. “We want to avoid future layoffs and sincerely hope that we can but that decision is dependent on the business climate during the rest of the new year. It is important to note that as we continue to consolidate some operations to achieve greater efficiencies there will be some position eliminations as our normal course of business but that is different than a division-wide layoff,” the FAQ read.

The cuts affect 20,000 employees, Gannett Blog’s Jim Hopkins says, and the fact that they’re coming in the first quarter of the year for the fourth year running suggests “the company is now locked in a cycle of early-year furloughs as it struggles to deal with continued revenue declines.”

Not good.

ADP Predicts Healthy Employment Gains In November

Payroll giant ADP reported that private employment grew by 206,000 in November, the largest gain in 11 months and nearly twice the average monthly gain since May.

The biggest growth occurred at small companies, those with 49 workers or less, where 110,000 jobs were added, mostly in the service sector. Another 84,000 jobs were added at medium-size businesses, and large businesses added 12,000 workers.

ADP tracks only private employment. The US Department of Labor’s monthly report, which tracks jobs in both the private and public sectors, will be released Friday, where the news of the private growth will likely be tempered with some cutbacks in the public sector.

Still, ADP’s report roundly beat analysts’ estimates. Bloomberg economists had predicted between 95,000 and 200,000 jobs would be added this month.

You’ve Got Two Weeks To Land On Employers’ Radars


The end of the year is actually a great time for job searching, but you can’t wait until the end of the year.

MainStreet.com suggests that to take advantage of opportunities borne out of a desire to spend the last of 2011′s budget, you want to get out there by the second week of December.

“If your resume comes in too close to Christmas and New Year’s, it won’t have enough lead time and could end up at the bottom of the pile of January resumes,” Carolyn Hughes, VP of people at SimplyHired, told Mainstreet. “There is an urgency on the employer side that happens at the end of the year, which you don’t see at any other time of the year,” she added.

The hiring process takes up to three months normally, but during the holiday season that time can be chopped in half, MainStreet says, since employers would love nothing more than to get someone set up in December and have them start right after the new year.

Traffic to job boards is also down this month, which means that for those who push through, they’ll be rewarded with less competition (until January when job applications really increase.)

400 Jobs To Be Eliminated At Canada’s Largest Newspaper Publisher

Sad news from our neighbors to the north: Quebecor Inc. is eliminating 400 jobs from its Sun Media division, which publishes newspapers across the country, CTV reports.

Half those jobs will be eliminated through buyouts, while one hundred open positions will remain unfilled and a further hundred people will be laid off, Southern Ontario Newsmedia Guild president Paul Morse told CTV.

No word on what department(s) will be hit by the cuts, and Quebecor execs haven’t confirmed anything, but we’ll be watching.

Sun Media’s last round of major layoffs came three years ago when 600 jobs were cut.

American Public Media Acquires Journo Crowdfunding Site Spot.Us

After three years of crowdfunding freelance journalists’ pitches to cover everything from corruption to crime to the environment, Spot.Us has been acquired.

American Public Media has acquired the site and will integrate it with its Public Insight Network, according to a release. Terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed.

“Spot.Us and PIN both believe in the power of the independent voice in journalism – from both journalists and sources, making the acquisition an ideal move,” said Joaquin Alvarado, senior vice president of digital innovation at APM, in a statement. “PIN believes in the important work of Spot.Us and we will explore opportunities to continue to drive the effectiveness and relevancy of the site even further in the future.”

Spot.us founder David Cohn was less reserved in the email he sent out to site users, saying: “It’s going to be freak’n awesome!”

Cohn also assured users that the format of the site won’t change. You’ll still be able to pay freelancers for their great pitches the same way the site’s always worked.

It Costs A Lot To Recruit New Employees —More For Smaller Companies

Small and midsize companies pay more than $1500 more per hire than large businesses, the Wall Street Journal reports today.

While it’s not super surprising that large businesses pay less per hire (after all, they hire so many more people!), we were a little surprised by the actual numbers: $1,949 per hire for a large company, versus $3,632 at medium firms and $3,665 at small firms.

The data comes from a new survey by HR advisory firm Bersin & Associates. The survey also noted that this recruitment cost is three times as much as the company spends on training those employees once hired.
