Happy Friday one and all!
When we read this piece on Forbes, we got inspired. After all, as the weekend approaches with a nice break from the daily grind, we have recreation and errands on our minds. Well, apparently there’s a connection between successful people at work and how they spend their weekends. Let’s become part of that group, okay?
1. Log off. As in truly disconnect. Laura Vanderkam, author of What the Most Successful People Do on the Weekend, told the site, “I’m not saying the whole weekend, but even just a walk without the phone can feel liberating. I advocate taking a ‘tech Sabbath.’ If you don’t have a specific religious obligation of no-work time, taking Saturday night to mid-day Sunday off is a nice, ecumenical time that works for many people.”
2. Socialize. She explained, “Humans are social creatures, and studies of people’s experienced happiness through the day finds that socializing ranks right up there, not too far down below sex.”
Another way to get your social game on is to combine it with community events or volunteer activities like attending a religious service and social mixer.
3. Exercise. That’s right, time to get movin’! This is especially true for those of us glued to our desks throughout the week. In addition to the physical aspect, it’ll give you the opportunity to clear your mind and brainstorm. In particular, this time of year lends itself well to a nice outdoor walk or bicycle ride.
4. Pursue a passion. Executive coach Dale Kurow, M.S., mentioned in the piece, “There’s a creative director of a greeting card company who went back to school to pursue an MFA because of her love of art. Pursuing this passion turned into a love of poetry that she now writes on weekends.”
5. Reflect. When you take a break from things, the opportunity presents itself to reflect upon your happiness and accomplishments. Gratitude begins to shine through.
6. Meditate. Whether you meditate alone at home or go to a specific class, it’s all good. Roy Cohen, career coach and author of The Wall Street’s Professional Survival Guide, told the site, “How better to equip yourself for success in this very tough world?”
7. Reboot. Sure, the adrenalin may run at an all-time high during the week but it has to burn out sometime, right? Vanderkam added, “Peak performance requires managing downtime, too–with the goal of really recharging your batteries.”
