Scandal du Jour: Plagiarism!

The Words” is a new film starring everyone’s favorite faux Frenchman, Bradley Cooper. Its plot, as we understand it, revolves around the concept of author as plagiarist–and while we can’t exactly recommend the movie based on its critical reception, we thought we’d use this opportunity (and the emergence of another small-scale plagiarism story) to examine parallel scandals that engaged the chattering classes this summer: the public trials of Jonah Lehrer and Fareed Zakaria.

Seems like everyone is copying the work of others these days–even noted wordsmith Chuck Norris has been caught red-handed. The two men at the center of this hot topic are very different personalities—and both the charges leveled against them and the public’s reaction to their respective PR crises have been very different as well. Fareed Zakaria is a respected journalist and TV news personality while Jonah Lehrer is (or, more accurately, was) a rising writer, speaker, and acknowledged expert in the realms of neurology and human behavior.

What, exactly, did they do?

Zakaria copied a paragraph of a Time article on gun control from an earlier New Yorker piece by historian Jill Lepore. CNN also found that one of his blog posts for CNN.com “contained similar unattributed quotes.” When accused of other acts of sloppy journalism, he lashed out at critics before backing down.

Lehrer’s first crime was plagiarizing himself—observers discovered that he often repeated passages that had appeared in previous columns or books. While this was bad news for Lehrer, it wasn’t necessarily the end of the world. Unfortunately, further investigations uncovered a disturbing history of similar behavior during his time at Wired and other publications. And that wasn’t the worst of it: The final, damning revelation was the fact that Lehrer had straight-up invented nonexistent Bob Dylan quotes for his bestselling book “Imagine”—and when pressed on his offense, he denied it and made more false claims before breaking down and confessing to his own dishonesty.

The saddest part about these stories is that both writers remain very talented, very busy men who obviously bit off more than they could chew. What conclusions can we, as PR and media professionals, draw from their cases?

Revolving Door: Media Coverage of OWS, Ryan Gosling Protests, and More

The media was a big presence during Occupy Wall Street’s “Day of Action,” which also marked the two-month anniversary of the movement. Some of the coverage was had the same level of confusion that was present on the ground.

Newsweek/The Daily Beast had some high-profile departures this week.

The Early Show is being overhauled with a new studio and new talent, including Oprah’s friend Gayle King and media vet Charlie Rose. Chris Wragge, who was brought in from WCBS/Channel 2, will not be the primary host of the show starting next year but has a contract through 2014.

And Jim Romenesko‘s resignation from Poynter.org, following criticism from the site’s online director Julie Moos over “questionable attribution,” sparked plenty of discussion across the media.

Ryan Gosling fans are pissed off that their guy wasn’t chosen to be People‘s Sexiest Man Alive. Fans protested in front of the magazine’s offices to let the editors know that they made a mistake putting that other gorgeous man (French-speaking sexy master Bradley Cooper) on the cover. We’ll call it a dead heat. BuzzFeed organized the faux-test.

Bradley Cooper Reinvents Himself with Some Smooth French Talking

In case you care what he’s saying, a YouTuber was kind enough to translate Cooper’s interview. Different clips of the video have a combined total of tens of thousands of views.

Bradley Cooper went on a French news program to promote his new movie The Hangover Part II and walked away with a brand new reputation across Hollywood, the media, and with moviegoers. He accomplished this by conducting the entire interview in French, which instantaneously made him jaw-droppingly hot to everyone with sense enough to see it.

A good looking movie star speaking French fluently. If that could describe all of your clients, a publicist’s job would be much less stressful.

Budweiser Not Responsible for ‘The Hangover’ in Part II

Product placement everywhere you turn. Except for that one scene in The Hangover Part II where Bradley Cooper said Budweiser but they didn’t actually flash the beer logo all over the screen. Missed opportunity?

Not if you ask Budweiser. Unlike other companies, they actually said no the movie because the scene wasn’t in line with their marketing.

“The brother-in-law in that scene was underage,” Anheuser-Busch’s director of marcomms Mike Bulthaus told the Vulture blog. “We invest a lot of money in our efforts to combat underage drinking. It’s an issue we take seriously.”

Well well. Companies that were featured include IHOP, which was in a scene where someone yells out the naughty C-word.

Product placement has gotten so ubiquitous Morgan Spurlock made a movie about it and the next James Bond movie has $45 million worth of it.
