Los Angeles Makes ‘Meatless Mondays’ Official

Farmers Market Produce We can all agree that most Americans (ourselves included) would benefit from eating a little less meat. It’s not that meat isn’t delicious or that it’s always unhealthy; it’s just that we tend to rely a little too much on beef and bread.

You may have heard of “Meatless Monday”, a public health PR campaign created in 2003 by marketing vet Sid Lerner and promoted by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine‘s Center for a Livable Future in order to make healthy dietary choices more palatable to the otherwise distracted masses. Why Monday? Turns out we’re more receptive to healthy messages after indulging in the excesses of the average weekend (beer, football, BBQ…you know the deal).

Last week the Los Angeles City Council decided, by unanimous vote, to declare all LA Mondays “meatless” and to incorporate the message into its regular operations. What does this mean, exactly? We imagine that the subsequent PR campaign will resemble a much smaller version of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” project. The city’s mayor might even make a guest appearance on The Biggest Loser (hint hint).

Of course, the city can’t require anyone to suffer through every miserable Monday without the delicious life-giving taste of flesh…

Roll Call: PRWA Launches, Foursquare Seeks a PR Director

A merger between two international PR networks –ECP Global Communications and IPAN (International Public Relations Agency Network) — has resulted in a new group, the PR World Alliance (PRWA). PRWA has 17 members (all independent firms) across 13 countries in North America and Europe with partners across Asia, Africa, and South America. Peter Stanton, CEO of Stanton Communications, is chair of the new organization. Additional info about members and offerings available here.

Foursquare is looking for a new PR director to head up business- and tech-focused PR efforts, PRWeek reports. Last month, Foursquare had a gaggle of news, including the exit of its VP of business development, Tristan Walker. M Booth was named its consumer PR firm in February.

What’s Going On at BlogHer

BlogHer has become a big deal, with 3,000 visitors expected between yesterday’s kick-off and tomorrow’s finale. DeVries PR offers some tips for those attending the San Diego event, to help from getting too overwhelmed. PepsiCo is also trying to make things a little more intimate, taking some activities off the show floor to smaller settings.

According to Jamie Stein, director of digital initiatives at PepsiCo, the company has a variety of brandcentric happenings planned like a Quaker pod off the show floor where folks can taste a new Chewy granola bar and a Trop50 CSR program with E! host Giuliana Rancic to support free school breakfast programs. “These women are important to us and to our long-term success,” Stein said.

BlogHer is also making news because of findings about young children and their use of smartphones.
