Will You Be Pitching to Ezra Klein’s Vox?

It’s a worthy question, because despite former Washington Post writer Ezra Klein’s wonky history reporting on economics, his new venture Vox promises to cover “Politics, public policy, world affairs, pop culture, science, business, food, sports, and everything else that matters.”

This promo video also serves as a look into the current state of reporting. When was the last time you saw a trailer for a news organization?

Klein’s challenge is to convince the public to pay attention to factual stories that don’t contain the latest form of visual distraction. As the founder himself puts it, he’s betting the bank that readers will eat their media veggies as long as the material isn’t presented in such an unappealing “this is good for you but we guarantee you will hate it” way.

We’re very interested in seeing where Vox goes with this concept, but for now the launch is a nice reminder of the inherent challenge of getting people to click and, referring to the “understand the news” tagline, truly absorb informative content.

Ezra Klein Is About to Leave the Washington Post

For those not in the know about reporters, writers and journos as a whole, Ezra Klein is a pretty big deal. (Due to respect to Ron Burgundy, of course.) In fact, some would argue along the Beltway that his pet project, Wonkblog, is the sole reason Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com fame even had a paper to purchase in the first place.

According to several reports, Klein is about tell Bezos to place his position at WaPo on Amazon, because he is interested in seeking “an eight-figure investment” for a project that would be “a new website dedicated to explanatory journalism on a wide range of topics beyond political policy.”

Why can’t Daddy Warbucks pay eight figures to keep that guy?

Obama’s Oval Office Address: Did it Help?

President Obama gave the first Oval Office address of his presidency last night, to speak about the Gulf Coast oil spill and the administration’s plan moving forward.

In the address, Obama said the government will fight the spill, “with everything we’ve got for as long it takes. We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy.”

Last night and into this morning, observers from both the left and the right voiced opinions.
