An industry driven by the power of instant visual impressions has found a natural partner in the app that’s all about capturing the moment and passing it along to the rest of the world.

The growing partnership between fashion and Instagram almost makes too much sense: for example, a quick search for #NYFW on the network yields an endless bounty of shots taken by users who range from schooled photographers to gawkers and lucky gatecrashers. It’s the perfect tool not just for fashion followers but for designers themselves, who cop to co-opting others’ shots for both inspirational and promotional purposes. What better way to see what everyone’s wearing without dirtying your brand new shoes on the streets of New York or Paris?

Nanette Lepore, for example, tells The New York Times that she regularly scrolls through her fans’ Instagram clips, where the themes that emerge from a never-ending sea of shots give her ideas for upcoming collections (someone must have been wearing a lot of white and beige last year):

Indie Designers Rock at Nolcha Fashion Week

Lady Gaga may be temporarily out of commission on the concert circuit due to an injury, but her eclectic, fashion-focused spirit lived on yesterday at Yotel, a mod hotel on Manhattan’s west side. That’s where Nolcha hosted its Fashion Lounge as part of its Fashion Week spinoff showcasing the collections of independent designers.

As a quick recap of all the recent fashion action, New York’s Fashion Week is a multifaceted affair. Much of the media and public attention focused on the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. That event concluded yesterday, but it wasn’t the only game in town: Over the past few days, Nolcha Fashion Week featured independent designers on the runways of New York’s Pier 59.

Independent designers have gained cachet during President Obama’s time in office after FLOTUS Michelle wore their creations during high profile events at the White House that provided great publicity to young designers such as Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo.

Nolcha Fashion Week capitalizes on that indie creative trend, just like the Sundance Film Festival does for independent filmmakers. As Alyson Roy, partner publicist for amp3, the PR firm that organized the event said, the fashion lounge is all about the sponsors. They included clothing and accessory designers, who displayed their wares in accessible private cabin spaces. Another sponsor manufactures hair products, so part of the event was turned into a hair salon.

Target Makes Changes With Jason Wu Collection, But We Still Couldn’t Get Anything

Target made its Jason Wu capsule collection available in the wee hours of Sunday morning and, just like all the other collections, we managed to get absolutely nada. But not so for some folks, like the couple in this video, which has popped up across the Web as an example of the “hoarding” behavior of some shoppers who then post the items on eBay and other auction sites at inflated prices.

Target says it has taken steps to correct the problems that customers experienced with past collections, particularly the Missoni line. Among the changes: a different launch time, making the collection available in fewer stores, and better estimates for demand.

February 5 isn’t just Super Bowl Sunday. It’s also the day that Target makes the Jason Wu for Target capsule collection available. Set your alarm clocks for midnight and let the mayhem begin?

Announced back in October, the date is finally upon us. Every fashion magazine that we’ve picked up this month has a blurb about the release date, so it’s definitely getting the media coverage.

But we wonder if the coverage is because of the excitement surrounding a new Target collection, or anticipation for Jason Wu.

Target Announces New Design Collaboration with Jason Wu

How do you top a sold out, website-crashing guest collection from Missoni? By bringing in Jason Wu for a collection of clothing and accessories, maybe.

Target used its Twitter handle @TargetStyle to give followers five clues about who would be the next guest designer. WWD confirmed in a story today that Wu, who is best known for designing First Lady Michelle Obama’s one-shouldered inaugural gown, will be the next designer up for a guest spot. The new line, expected in February 2012, already has a hashtag, #JasonWuforTarget.
