Rob Ford Is Trying Really, Really, Really Hard to Make a Comeback

Toronto’s crack Mayor Rob Ford finally gave an interview that wasn’t totally embarrassing.

Appearing on the Today show this morning to speak with Matt Lauer three months after vowing to make changes, Ford sat up straight and calmly answered questions about how he’s doing and his plans for the future. In a nutshell, he’s working out and preparing to campaign for another term as mayor with elections taking place on October 27.

Despite Ford’s monotone and lack of antics, there are two interesting things about this interview.

The ‘Today’ Anchors Threw Twinkies At The Rockefeller Center Crowd. The Comeback Is Complete?

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Just a few short weeks ago, we were counting down the minutes until the Twinkie made its big return to store shelves. Well it happened today… or rather it happened on TodayAl Roker and Twinkie the Kid escorted a Twinkie truck (strangely, with a big cupcake on the side of it) into Rockefeller Center at which point Al dragged a tub of Twinkies over to Savannah Guthrie, Tamron Hall, and Willie Geist and they hurled cakes at the crowd. Welcome back Twinkie…

Today show segment is a big get, but the whole thing was a little low on enthusiasm if you ask us. But really, the big test is with the customers.

‘Today’ Show Producer: Leave Matt Lauer Alone!

NBC’s perennial ratings champion “Today” recently made some fairly big changes by pushing old hand Ann Curry out in favor of fresh-faced Savannah Guthrie. Amazingly, the world continued to turn.

But there’s a bit of tension over at 30 Rock these days, because “Good Morning America” has finally started to beat “Today” in the ratings after a nearly unbroken 16-year streak playing runner-up.

Right after the switch, media gossips began to wonder whether “Today’s” biggest star (apologies to mid-day drinking aficionados Kathy and Hoda) was behind the change. Even Al Roker came down on Ann’s side by accusing Matt of “throw[ing] one of us under the bus.” Leave it to the New York Post to come up with a fitting nickname for “Anchor Animal” Lauer and accuse him of being too demanding on set. Juicy!

Well, in an apparent attempt to control the rumors and counter the negative press, executive producer Jim Bell gave interviews to both The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times “Media Decoder” blog this week.

‘GMA’ Winning This Week’s Ratings Battle With ‘Today’

This was Savannah Guthrie‘s first week as co-host of the Today show, but it may not be an overall ratings winner.

According to preliminary numbers, Good Morning America is winning the week so far by 360,000 total viewers and 40,000 in the 25 to 54-year-old age range.

Ratings for the new show Good Afternoon America are also doing pretty well, with the program getting 1.92 million total viewers on Monday and 2.04 million on Tuesday.

Today is preparing to bring its A-game to the London Olympics, which kick off in a couple of weeks. Any thoughts about Guthrie’s co-hosting skill or Good Afternoon America? The comments section is open.

‘Today’ Mishandles Ann Curry’s Departure

Savannah Guthrie was officially named the new Today show co-host, just a day after Ann Curry gave her tearful on-air good-bye. Now the challenge for Today is making the transition to a new host without alienating the fans of the old one. To do that, according to the NY Times, the show is trying to keep the change low-key.

The problem is this change was anything but. There were leaks and speculation for about a week. And on the day of her departure, there was this big story in USA Today.

Ann Curry Bids a Tearful Farewell to ‘Today’

There were rumors yesterday evening that this news would be coming today, but it didn’t make watching it any easier.

Ann Curry bid a tearful farewell to the Today show this morning, expressing her love for the viewers, her colleagues, and the behind-the-scenes players on the show.

There had been speculation over the past week or so that she would be leaving the show, possibly with a big payday. During her announcement, Curry said she’d be working on big stories, “the work that most of us got into journalism to do,” which will be broadcast across NBC’s news programs. NBC News president Steve Capus went into further detail about the types of stories Curry would be covering: “humanitarian” stories both here and abroad.

Morning Show Changes Give Media Strategists Something to Think About

For clients and PRs, the Today show is a tremendous media hit. So the tumult at the show over the past couple of months should have media specialists paying close attention. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the enormity of a hit on GMA. And specialists have to keep watch to see if Ann Curry’s departure will dramatically change the Today show program.

Mike Tyson Stopped By the ‘Today’ Show and, As Expected, It Was Kind of Crazy

It was only yesterday that boxing’s former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson and the filmmaker Spike Lee were announcing the one-man show “Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth.” Just like that, they managed to snag an “exclusive” spot with Ann Curry this morning to talk it up on the Today show.

Soooo. Wow. Let’s start by saying that Ann Curry, a fantastic reporter, was probably not the best person to handle what Tyson was inevitably bringing to the set.
