‘Nightline’ #1 in Q2

They won the 2011-2012 season, so it figures “Nightline” would also be the #1 show in late night for the second quarter.

In numbers just released, the ABC News show topped NBC’s “The Tonight Show” by the largest gaps in 17 years: in A25-54 demo (by +180,000 viewers), in the A18-49 demo (by +199,000) and in Total Viewers (by +333,000).

ABC’s ratings are based on a 25-minute broadcast, while CBS and NBC are based on approximately :50 minutes (prior to the final national commercial break of each program).

As she was preparing to anchor “Nightline” last night and writing her script for a story on this morning’s “Good Morning America,” Cynthia McFadden kept her office TV on ABC, and caught herself in a cameo on the new ABC show “Revenge.”

ABC News and Yahoo! were among the media entities hosting cocktail parties tonight ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton. ABC’s primetime stars mingled with ABC Newsers, many of whom arrived just a few hours earlier. TVNewser hears the 2pm Delta shuttle from New York brought several ABC News anchors to D.C. including Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric (who was actually on the way to her brother’s wedding) and Cynthia McFadden as well as NBC’s Harry Smith, and others. Synergy! ABC News Promoting ABC Drama ‘Revenge’ With ‘Revenge for Real’ Specials

This has been a strong week for corporate synergy. NBCUniversal has been going all-out to promote the upcoming Universal movie “The Lorax” on shows like “The Voice” and “Today,” and today ABC announced some synergy of its own tied into the drama series “Revenge.”

“Revenge” is about betrayal and crime among rich people in the Hamptons–you may have seen some ads for it on Sunday’s Oscars telecast. ABC News is stepping in to take over “Revenge”‘s Wednesday timeslot for two weeks in March with the specials “Revenge for Real: Murder in the Hamptons.”

Newsers Pack the Waldorf to Honor Women Reporters

PBS’ Judy Woodruff was the mistress of ceremony at an awards luncheon of the of International Women’s Media Foundation today at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Four women journalists were honored for their work confronting danger while doing their jobs. Among them: Adela Navarro Bello, general director and columnist for Zeta news magazine in Mexico, Reuters Iran bureau chief Parisa Hafezi and Chiranuch Premchaiporn, director and webmaster of the Prachatai online newspaper in Thailand. Kate Adie, a BBC anchor, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Spotted in the crowd, CBS News’s Lesley Stahl, NBC’s Kate Snow and from ABC News, president Ben Sherwood, “Nightline” co-anchor Cynthia McFadden, “This Week” host Christiane Amanpour, correspondents Martha Raddatz and Juju Chang, and GMA co-anchor George Stephanopoulos.

ABC News Stars Assemble for Photo Shoot

Just about anybody who is on ABC News was in a photo studio on Manhattan’s West Side this morning for what ABC News president Ben Sherwood calls a one-of-a-kind photo shoot. “Never in the history of the industry has there been a photo like this,” said Sherwood to his team, according to someone who was there. “It is a real Mt. Olympus shot,” he added.

Among the ABC News talent on hand Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, Katie Couric, Christiane Amanpour, George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, Sam Champion, Lara Spencer, Josh Elliott, Cynthia McFadden, Bill Weir, Terry Moran, Bianna Golodryga, Dan Harris, Ron Claiborne, Chris Cuomo, Elizabeth Vargas, Bob Woodruff, John Quinones, David Muir, Brian Ross, Jake Tapper and Rob Nelson.

Expect to see the photos in marketing a promotional materials on air and online, soon.

ABC News Partners with Yahoo!


Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, David Muir, Katie Couric, Chris Cuomo, Terry Moran, Bill Weir, Cynthia McFadden and more ABC News anchors and managers joined Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos at “Good Morning America’s” Times Square studios at 8:30amET to announce a new partnership with Yahoo! From Stephanopoulos:

ABC News is joining forces with Yahoo! It’s a brand new partnership that is instantly going to be the #1 news source online, reaching 100 million people. We believe this is the future of news.

As of this morning, “Good Morning America” is already part of Yahoo.com. Following GMA, Stephanopoulos is heading to Washington DC to interview President Obama, which will stream on Yahoo.com. TV News Reflects on 9/11/2001: CNN’s Soledad O’Brien and ABC’s Cynthia McFadden

With the 10th anniversary of the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks approaching, TVNewser reached out to anchors, reporters, producers and executives for their thoughts on that day, and what they believe has changed in the last 10 years.

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, who worked for NBC News as weekend co-anchor of “Today” in 2001:

I was pregnant with my daughter Cecilia, and I was taking my dry cleaning out. I looked up and I saw a plane slam into the World Trade Center — I lived downtown at the time. Everybody on the street stopped, and I thought, a small private plane — the pilot must have had a heart attack, and the plane hit the building. All you could see was the smoke. So I took my stuff to the dry cleaner, and then I went back home and turned the TV on. And then you could see, it was much worse.

NBC assigned me to go to Chelsea Piers, where the ambulances were. My sister, who is a surgeon, was dispatched there as well — we were talking a lot. I called my doctor and he said “the baby will be fine, but that stuff is very bad for you to breathe in.”  Read more

Bin Laden Killed: Jonathan Karl and Dick Cheney on One-hour ‘Nightline’

Just like the evening newscasts, ABC’s “Nightline” will also be an hour tonight and will include more of ABC’s Jonathan Karl‘s interview with former VP Dick Cheney. NBC News caught up with Cheney this morning and Fox News did a phone interview with him earlier today. “Nightline” will also have reports from Christiane Amanpour, Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran, and Bill Weir in New York and ABC News’ Nick Schifrin will report from Pakistan on the latest news from the region.

Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer to Lead ABC News Royal Wedding Coverage

ABC News has slated its coverage plans for the upcoming Royal Wedding. Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer will lead the network’s coverage, which includes almost 20 hours on ABC, in addition to other platforms.

On Friday, Walters and Sawyer will anchor live starting at 4 AM ET, joined by “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts, who will be anchoring from London all week.

Contributors to the broadcast will include: Newsweek/Daily Beast editor Tina Brown, former Royal press secretary Colleen Harris, Royal Historian Robert Lacey; and Royal Editor for the Sun Newspaper, Duncan Larcombe. Also appearing will be one of Princess Diana’s bridesmaids, India Hicks.

“ABC World News” will be broadcast from London Wednesday, April 27 to Friday April 29, while Cynthia McFadden anchors “Nightline” from London all week.

Even Disney Channel is getting into the game, with Juju Chang hosting a short form series about the Royal Wedding for kids all week long.
