ABC News Adds Jeff Zeleny To Politics Beat

ABC News is adding New York Times political reporter Jeff Zeleny to its lineup of correspondents. Zeleny will be covering Congress and politics for ABC. As ABC News president Ben Sherwood noted in an email to ABC staff this morning, Zeleny routinely breaks big news stories at the Times.

Earlier this month Jeff revealed that Karl Rove is starting a new group to focus on recruiting seasoned Republican candidates to run in the next round of Congressional races – a story that drove the news cycle for days. During the 2012 campaign he broke the news that President Obama would support a Democratic Super PAC, a reversal from his strongly held position in 2008.

Zeleny may not be the only Timeser to be heading to ABC News. Politico’s Dylan Byers also reports that Susan Saulny is also having discussions with ABC, though Times editor Jill Abramson notes that they are interested in keeping their talent in-house of they can.

ABC is trying to replenish its political lineup, which took a hit with the departure of Jake Tapper and Virginia Moseley in the last few months.

Sherwood’s note is after the jump.

When Should Reporters Disclose Connections?

Let’s get this out of the way: conflicts of interest are rife in the TV news business.

CBS News president (and former Fox News executive) David Rhodes is the brother of one of President Obama’s advisers Ben Rhodes. NBC News anchor Andrea Mitchell is married to former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan. Bob Schieffer‘s brother Tom Schieffer was President Bush’s Ambassador to Japan.

In other words: potential conflicts happen all the time. The question is when should they be disclosed? Typically subjects with a conflict aren’t allowed to cover anything related to that conflict. If they do, a disclosure is a must.

The latest flap involves new CNN anchor Jake Tapper.
