Joel Nichols Set to Join KSHB in Kansas City

joel nichols promoWeathercaster Joel Nichols is joining KSHB, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City, The Pitch reports. Nichols most recently worked at rival KMBC, the ABC affiliate in Kansas City.

“Joel Nichols will be joining 41 Action News later this summer,” KSHB creative services director Randy Thurman said. “We are excited to have him on our team.”

Nichols worked at KMBC for 25 years before signing off in January. According to The Pitch, KSHB has been running promos advertising Nichols’ return (pictured).

WTVA Meteorologist Orders Staffers to the Basement as Tornado Sweeps Through Tupelo

Employees at WTVA, the NBC affiliate in Tupelo, were forced to seek shelter during a live broadcast this afternoon as a tornado approached the area (video above).

“This is a tornado emergency for Lee County,” chief meteorologist Matt Laubhan said moments before the evacuation. “This is a tornado ripping through the city of Tupelo as we speak. And this could be deadly.”

Around 3 p.m., Laubhan informed viewers that the station, which was reportedly running on backup power, was sheltering most people, “except the absolutely essential staff.”

The station later tweeted, “We are safe here.”

Meteorologist Austin Caviness Leaving WXII

austin cavinessAustin Caviness is leaving WXII to become the pastor at Salem Fork Christian Church in Dobson, the Triad Business Journal reports. Caviness has been a meteorologist at the Winston-Salem NBC affiliate since 1997.

“All of us at WXII 12 hate to lose Austin, but we fully support his decision to go into the ministry. We thank Austin for his years of service to our viewers and wish him and his family the very best,” WXII president and general manger Hank Price said in a statement.

Caviness will officially sign off from WXII at the end of May.

KDFW to Add Ali Turiano as Weekend Meteorologist

turiano_outsizedAli Turiano is joining Dallas-Fort Worth FOX owned station KDFW as weekend meteorologist on May 28.

“I have always dreamed of being a part of the Dallas community and am looking forward to calling the “Big D” my home,” Turiano said in a statement. “North Texas’ varied climate and great community make this job a dream come true.”

Turiano recently announced she was leaving News 13 in Orlando after six years there. She has also worked at WENY in Elmira, NY , and WICU in Erie, PA.

With the Addition of Adam Caskey, Steve Browne to Scale Back at KSAT

steve browneSan Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT has announced Adam Caskey will be the meteorologist on the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts when he joins the station. Caskey replaces Steve Browne (pictured), who will remain on the 10 p.m. newscast.

“Father time and constant deadline pressure was taking a toll leaving me with the realization that it is time to ask for help,” Browne wrote on the KSAT website. “…I will have more time to pursue other interests. I am not retiring,  just stepping back. I truly believe this is a win win situation for all involved and look forward to the future.”

Caskey joins KSAT after 11 years at WJLA. Browne has worked at the station since 1992.

Former KMBC Meteorologist Lisa Teachman Joining KCTV

Lisa-Teachman--2010----29339610Former KMBC meteorologist Lisa Teachman is joining Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV.

“Family and close friends…I am happy to share this announcement with you!” Teachman wrote on her facebook page. “I am joining KCTV5 as their 5th meteorologist!!!! I am so excited and thrilled to be working with the most accurate weather team in Kansas City.”

Teachman left KMBC in January after her contract had reportedly not been renewed.

The Kansas City Star reports she will do both weather and traffic for the morning show starting Thursday.

Ali Turiano Leaving News 13

turiano_outsizedMeteorologist Ali Turiano is leaving News 13 in Orlando, FL.

“Her last day is May 9th,” Tim Geraghty, News 13 senior director of news, told the Orlando Sentinel. “The search is underway for her replacement.”

Turiano started at News 13 in 2008 after working at WENY in Elmira, NY. There’s no word where she’s headed.

WBBH Meteorologist Jim Reif Injured in Bike Accident

jim reifWBBH director of meteorology Jim Reif was injured in a bike accident Sunday afternoon, the Fort Myers NBC affiliate reports.

Reif was thrown to the ground after his bike hit a sign on Ben Hill Griffin Parkway. According to WBBH, he hit his head on the curb and suffered traumatic injuries to the head.

Reif joined Waterman Broadcasting, WBBH’s parent company, in 1999 as chief meteorologist for WZVN, the ABC affiliate in Fort Myers. Currently, he serves as director of meteorology for both stations. He recently got engaged to be married.

Leigh Glaser Leaving KGO After 23 Years

glaser_kgo facebook smallTVSpy has learned Leigh Glaser, veteran meteorologist for KGO, is leaving the ABC owned San Francisco station.

Glaser has been the weekend meteorologist for 10 of the 23 years she has been with KGO.

In an email obtained by TVSpy, KGO news director Tracey Watkowski told staffers, “[Leigh] told me she wants to be able to go to 49ers games, NASCAR races and attend all of her daughter’s activities.  Leigh wants to fully enjoy the family events that only happen on the weekends.”

Her last newscast will be this Sunday, April 6.

‘The Wind Just Blew Me Over. We’re Gonna Throw it Back to You Guys’

rick mecklenburg falls overThe perils of weather reporting were on full display in Grand Rapids yesterday during Rick Mecklenburg‘s live weather report, which was interrupted by a gust of wind that blew the WXMI chief meteorologist’s chair to the ground.

Mecklenburg made it through most of his report (in which he had to inform viewers of possible snow in the area this weekend) before abruptly falling out of his chair. “Sorry about that! The wind just blew me over,” Mecklenberg said through his laughter. “We’re gonna throw it back to you guys.”
