WJBK’s Charlie LeDuff Named GQ’s ‘Mad Man of the Year’

leduff_croppedCharlie LeDuff, reporter for Detroit FOX owned station WJBK has been named “Mad Man of the Year” by GQ magazine.

“Besides being the author of a best-selling book about how fucked Detroit is (Detroit: An American Autopsy, published earlier this year), Charlie got famous by basically reinventing local news reporting,” wrote GQ’s Devin Friedman in the current issue which is set to appear on shelves Monday.

According to the Detroit Free Press, GQ said it chose LeDuff based on his  WJBK stories, his book and his appearance on Anthony Bourdain‘s CNN show “Parts Unknown.”

WJBK Reporter Denies Reports He Encouraged Detroit Mayoral Candidate to Enter Race

WJBK reporter Charlie LeDuff is hitting back at a report from a rival station claiming he encouraged a Detroit mayoral candidate to enter the race.

Mike Dugeon told ABC affiliate WXYZ he entered the primary race as a write-in candidate after a visit from LeDuff. Dugeon’s entry could potentially affect the outcome of the primary because his name is similar to another write-in candidate, Mike Duggan.

“He was like, ‘It seems like you’re thinking about it, man,’” Dugeon told WXYZ. “He was like, ‘I don’t want to pressure you because then you can say I pressured you. So I’m just going to sit here for a minute and let you decide.’ And then I thought about it, and a smirk popped up on my face, and I said, ‘Why not? Let’s go on down there.’”

In his report, WXYZ investigative reporter Ross Jones said LeDuff and his cameraman accompanied Dugeon to file the paperwork for his candidacy. Jones included LeDuff’s denial that he encouraged Dugeon to enter the race in the WXYZ report.

In a subsequent appearance on the Fox O&O, LeDuff told his side of the story, saying he got a tip that Dugeon was planning to enter the race and visited his house to follow up on it.

“I get a call from a camp, a political camp, saying this guy is going to put his name in. So as a reporter I go over there and knock on the door, I ask him. He says ‘No, what are you talking about?’ I explain what Dugeon and Duggan on the ballot means. He thinks about it, he likes the idea, he does it, I follow. End of story.”

“The story speaks for itself,” Jones told TVSpy in an email. “The allegations are being made by the man featured in Charlie’s story, not me or WXYZ.”

Detroit Stations Report Conflicting Accounts of Altercation Involving WJBK’s Charlie LeDuff

WJBK investigative reporter Charlie LeDuff was involved in a physical confrontation Sunday after the Detroit St. Patrick’s Day parade. A police report of the incident obtained by rival station WXYZ says LeDuff “urinated in public, insulted female police officers, got into a brawl, and bit a security guard who tried to break it up.”

According to WXYZ, the security guard, who spoke through his attorney Linda Bernard, saw LeDuff urinating on the street near a private tent party. The security guard, hired for the tent party, said he brought LeDuff into the tent to “help him out.” According to his account, LeDuff then made “very unsavory” comments to three female Detroit police officers. The security guard said the party’s host tried to intervene, at which point the security guard stepped in to break up the fight, according to WXYZ:

“The host of the party came over to him and said, ‘Did you really say what you just said?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I said it.’ And then he spit in his face. He spit in the host’s face,” said Bernard. That’s when the security guard tried to separate the two men.

“Mr. LeDuff then bites down on Sunny’s hand causing him significant injury,” said Bernard.

They say that it didn’t stop there. LeDuff allegedly promised to stop fighting. But once on his feet, he went after the host again. The police report says LeDuff’s brother Frank joined the fracas.

ABC affiliate WXYZ spoke to LeDuff about the incident. “I was offered to come have a drink, it turned into a fight, trying to get guys off me and my brother, and that’s the way it is. No hard feeling on my end,” he said.

Fox O&O WJBK reported the story on its 10 p.m. newscast Tuesday, saying LeDuff was “involved in a physical confrontation with a security guard.” Read more

WJBK’s Charlie LeDuff on Golfing Through Detroit: A ‘Sweet and Sour’ Look at the City

WJBK investigative reporter Charlie LeDuff says his favorite thing about golfing the length of Detroit is that the finished product is “anti-local TV.”

“It’s 11 minutes long. There’s no story there. No one was murdered, we’re not at the scene of an arson. It’s just taking a walk and trying to take a look at the city,” LeDuff told TVSpy in a recent interview. “I needed to take all that stuff I had been writing about — the fire department, the police department, municipal contracts, county corruption, that whole thing, and sort of put together a letter, some kind of commentary about who we are and how we live.”

The end result is what LeDuff calls a “sweet and sour” look at the Detroit — a trip through the city’s empty, dilapidated blocks, with some lighthearted moments along the way. Read more

WJBK Reporter Golfs Across Detroit

WJBK’s Charlie LeDuff has made a career out of taking on difficult stories but the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter may have found his biggest challenge yet: golfing across the city of Detroit.

Literally golfing, shot-to-shot, across the length of Detroit.

“It’s one hundred degrees, I’m wearing black, and I can’t golf,” LeDuff says in the resulting report, which features WJBK sports anchor Dan Miller. “But I’m committed because they’re talking [about] reinventing this city. What does that mean with millions of budget cuts? What does the city even look like block-by-block?” (Video after the jump). Read more

Detroit Fire Official Removed From Office Following Run-In with WJBK Reporter

Detroit deputy fire commissioner Fred Wheeler has been removed from office following a physical altercation with WJBK reporter Charlie LeDuff on Tuesday.

Working on a story about filthy conditions at a number of Detroit fire houses, LeDuff approached Wheeler on the street and things instantly went south.

“You better get the fuck away from me,” Wheeler told LeDuff once he saw him.  When LeDuff stepped closer to ask a question, Wheeler slapped the microphone out of his hand. Read more

WJBK’s Charlie LeDuff Remembers Hanging Out with Schwarzenegger and Baby Mama

WJBK‘s Charlie LeDuff is offering an interesting perspective on this week’s Schwarzenegger love child story.

LeDuff, a journalist with a diverse background who joined the Fox O&O in December, spent time with the Governator and his recently outed mistress while covering 2003′s recall election for The New York Times.

During a recent WJBK newscast, LeDuff recounted spending time with the Schwarzenegger family as well as Mildred Baena, the mother of Arnold’s secret child (video above).

LeDuff watched that year’s Golden Globes ceremony with Baena and the family and he remembers Schwarzenegger, fresh off of his groping scandal, saying about one actress: “ Look at her! Some queer told her she looks good in that but her t–s look like s–t!”
