During the Holidays, Local Stations Give Back

WGNO reporter Kenny Lopez says his favorite part of the holidays is “12 Days of Giving,” a series of reports that follow him as he performs random acts of kindness around the New Orleans community.

“My producers joke with me that this can be my schtick,” Lopez told TVSpy. “They say this is my thing now. I would love to do it every single Christmas.”

WGNO’s “12 Days of Giving” is one of many examples of local stations increasing charitable efforts around the holidays. There are toy drives and coat drives, telethons, visits to local hospitals. And there are more unique initiatives: KELO, the CBS affiliate in Sioux Falls, teamed up with a local radio station to sponsor “Drive Thru Difference Day,” encouraging people stopping at local drive-thrus to buy coffee or a meal for the person in line behind them.

WJAR kicked off its “Season of Giving” campaign to benefit the Make-a-Wish foundation with a telethon earlier this month. The Providence NBC affiliate raised $12,000 — which included a $5,000 donation from the station (pictured)  — and more than one million unused airline miles for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

“It felt like it was a perfect fit for the Christmas holiday season,” WJAR news director Chris Lanni told TVSpy. “It worked really well for us as a station to give back during this time to a cause that specifically helps children.” Read more

Report: WJAR Moving Longtime Anchor Gene Valicenti Off 11 p.m. Newscast

A major anchor shakeup is underway at WJAR, according to GoLocalProv:

An announcement has just been made to the staff that main anchor Gene Valicenti is being moved off the 11pm newscast.

In his place will go 7 p.m. anchor Dan Jaehnig. Station insiders tell us that Valicenti will work day-side doing some reporting and then will anchor the 6 p.m. with Patrice Wood.

TVSpy spoke with WJAR news director Chris Lanni this morning about the reported shakeup.  Lanni wouldn’t comment beyond saying that he didn’t know if Valicenti was scheduled to anchor tonight’s 11 p.m. newscast. Read more

In Providence, WJAR First to HD

WJAR became the first station in the Providence-New Bedford market to make the switch to HD on Monday, when the NBC-affiliate debuted a brand-new set and weather graphics during the morning newscast at 6:30 a.m.

“Our in-house set designer, Wally Franco, and his team worked tirelessly to create and build [a] news desk that showcases our video, our newsroom and our anchors’ keen interviewing skills,” WJAR news director Chris Lanni said of the new, HD-optimized set. “We’re looking forward to exploring all of the facets that this set has to offer in order to improve the viewer experience.”

WJAR put together a send-off for its old set as anchor Frank Coletta unveiled the new, HD studio (video above).

Last week general manager Lisa Churchville announced that the station would be broadcasting in HD by the end of the month. Read more
