KARE Reporter Sets Himself Apart With Ninth and Tenth Murrow Awards

boyd_hubbertNot every market has one, that reporter whose stories seem more like long poems than news reports.

Minneapolis-St. Paul has Boyd Huppert. The Pioneer Press has a story about the reporter for NBC affiliate KARE who was recently awarded two Edward R. Murrow awards to bring his total to ten.

Derrick Hinds, communications director at the Radio Television Digital News Association, which presents the Awards, told the Pioneer Press, “I’ve been around the organization for about 20 years. I don’t know of anybody who has a record like that. Certainly nobody in recent memory.”

Numerous stories have made an impact on KARE news director Jane Helmke during her 31 years at the station, but there are only a handful of specific lines she can recite. She has no problem recalling her favorite from Huppert that opened a 1997 story he did on the devastating Red River flood: “On the Lord’s day in Granite Falls, life along the river went to hell.”

“It was excellent,” Helmke said. “You could see it all in that one moment.” Read more

Rena Sarigianopoulos has been named Saturday morning co-host at KARE, the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis.

Sarigianopoulos will co-host the program with meteorologist Belinda Jensen beginning October 13. The newscast will air from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday mornings. In a statement, news director Jane Helmke called the pair “a dynamic and engaging team for our community.”

Sarigianopoulos will continue to anchor the weekend evening newscasts alongside Blake McCoy.

KARE Announces New Weekend Anchor Team

Blake McCoy is joining Minneapolis NBC-affiliate KARE as the weekend anchor, the station announced today.

McCoy begins next month alongside Rena Sarigianopoulos, who has been weekend anchor since 2009. He replaces Eric Perkins, who made the move to sports director at the station last month.

In a statement announcing the hire, news director Jane Helmke described McCoy as a “smart, exceptional journalist eager to call the Twin Cities his home.”

McCoy was most recently a weekend anchor and reporter at KTNV, the ABC-affiliate in Las Vegas. He joins Sarigianopoulos, meteorologist Jerrid Sebesta and Dave Schwartz, who was recently promoted to weekend sports anchor and reporter, beginning September 17.

KARE Names Jane Helmke News Director

KARE announced today that Jane Helmke, who’s been with the station for the past 28 years, has been promoted to news director.  The news comes less than a day after KARE’s longtime newsroom leader Tom Lindner, who the NBC-affiliate let go in April, announced his new job.

“Jane is a true leader, and her dedication and commitment to both our viewers and our news team will help us continue to be the most watched station in the Twin Cities,” KARE president and general manager John Remes said, in announcing the promotion.  “She’s played a critical role in making KARE 11 the station that people trust to deliver their news and information both on television and online, and we look forward to her continued leadership.” Read more
