On the Move, 9/16/13

Ross Shimabuku joins Al Jazeera America in New York City as a sports anchor. Previously, Shimabuku worked at KSWB in San Diego.

Maria Quiban becomes the meteorologist for the Fox Sports 1 College Football Saturday pregame show. She will continue in her role as weekday morning meteorologist at KTTV, the Fox owned station in Los Angeles.

Jonathan Martin joins Al Jazeera America as a Nashville-based correspondent. He previously worked as a reporter and anchor at WSMV in Nashville.

Chris Murphy joins WTXF in Philadelphia as anchor of “Good Day Philadelphia.” He comes from KGTV in San Diego.

Roop Raj, formerly the weekend morning anchor at WJBK in Detroit, has been promoted to anchor of the weekday 4:30 a.m. newscast. Read more

Al Jazeera America Announces Correspondents for Regional Bureaus

Al Jazeera America is adding five more correspondents from the local news landscape to its ranks. The network has announced the hires of Ash-har Quraishi, Heidi Zhou-Castro, Bisi Onile-EreNatasha Ghoneim and Jonathan Martin.

The three hires were revealed as the network, which is slated to launch next month, announced plans to open bureaus in 12 cities across the United States:  Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. With the exception of Zhou-Castro and Ghoneim, each of the correspondents will stay in the same market as they join Al Jazeera.

Quraishi, who will be Al Jazeera America’s Chicago correspondent, joins the network from WTTW, the PBS station in Chicago, where he was a reporter for the nightly newscast “Chicago Tonight” and a contributor to PBS “NewsHour.”

Zhou Castro joins Al Jazeera from YNN Austin, where she was the evening and weekend news anchor. She will be based in the network’s Dallas bureau.

Onile-Ere will be based in Detroit for Al Jazeera. She comes from WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit.  Read more

Jonathan Martin Signing Off From WSMV

WSMV weekend anchor and reporter Jonathan Martin is leaving the Nashville NBC affiliate. A formal announcement is expected on Martin’s plans in the coming weeks, TVSpy has learned. He will work at WSMV through the end of the July.

“His hard work, tenacity, team spirit and his thorough, responsible, and creative approach to news have made him a great fit for WSMV, and he’ll be missed,” WSMV news director Matthew Hilk wrote in a memo to staffers.

Martin joined WSMV in 2007. Before that, he spent two years as a reporter and anchor at WRDW, the CBS affiliate in Augusta, Ga.
