Former KTBC Anchor Diagnosed with Leukemia

hernandez_cropped_ktbcLoriana Hernandez left Austin FOX owned station KTBC earlier this month. She told viewers she was leaving to be with her husband and two year old son in Washington, D.C.

But, as Austin360.com reports, when Hernandez had some blood work done as part of the process to have a second child via in vitro fertilization, doctors found she had leukemia.

“The doctor called me crying,” Hernandez told Austin360. “I said, ‘What? You must be kidding.’ I was yelling and crying. It was unreal.”

Sadly, her doctor wasn’t kidding. She was very, very ill.

Hernandez wasted little time, booking a last-minute ticket and arriving at the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital late Monday. She expects to start six weeks of on-and-off chemotherapy Tuesday or Wednesday.

“They told me, ‘This can’t wait,’” she said.

The support from friends, former co-workers — and viewers who’ve never met the vibrant broadcast journalist — has been, from the start, overwhelming, Hernandez said. She says she is so incredibly grateful.

“I’m so touched,” she said. “My stomach hurts from crying so much, but I know I can beat this. I can kick its ass. I look at my precious son and I say, ‘Failure is not an option.’”

KTBC Adds Anchor to ‘Good Day Austin’

salinas_kdafAmanda Salinas has been named anchor for “Good Day Austin,” the morning news show for Austin FOX owned station KTBC.

“As a native Texan, who graduated from the University of Texas and has spent most of her career reporting and anchoring here, there is no one better versed on all things Austin than Amanda,” KTBC vice president and news director Pam Vaught said in a statement.

Salinas comes to KTBC from KDAF in Dallas. She has also worked at WPBF in West Palm Beach, WFAA in Dallas, KCEN in Waco and KGNS in Laredo, TX.

Beginning January 20, she joins Dave Froehlich, Zack Shields and Keri Bellacosa on “Good Day” and Froehlich as anchor on the Noon news.

Loriana Hernandez Leaving Austin FOX Station

hernandez_cropped_ktbcLoriana Hernandez has announced she is leaving KTBC.

“I have some bitter sweet news to share this Tuesday morning,” Hernandez wrote on her facebook page. “After 7 years here at Fox 7 I have decided it is time for me to join my husband Cesar in the DC area so we can raise our 19-month old son Gabriel under one roof. My husband and I have commuted for the past few years so I could keep doing what I love doing here at FOX 7 but we need to be together as a family.”

The morning anchor for the Austin FOX owned station went on to say her last day on-air would be January 3, but plans to stay in Austin until late January.

Hernandez came to KTBC in 2007. She started her career at CNN and CNN En Español and has also worked at KSEE in Fresno and KXAS in Dallas.
