WKMG Names Bridgett Williams Morning Anchor

It’s official: Bridgett Williams has been named the permanent morning anchor at WKMG, the CBS-affiliate in Orlando.

Williams stepped into the role on an interim basis over the summer, replacing Laura Diaz, who left the television business altogether in June. Williams was previously a weekday reporter and weekend anchor at WKMG.

In a statement announcing the move, WKMG general manager Skip Valet praised Williams’ addition to the morning team. “She has done a terrific job sitting in as co-anchor on the Local 6 Morning News and has become an important morning news team member,” he said. “So we asked her to make the job permanent.”

Laura Diaz Departs KCBS, Rick Garcia Tapped to Replace Her at 6 p.m.

Laura Diaz is leaving KCBS after nine years and the station announced on Friday that Rick Garcia, currently the co-anchor of KCAL’s 8 and 10 p.m. newscasts, will replace her at the 6 p.m.

“It has been an amazing run at CBS 2, and I’ll miss the many colleagues who have become close friends,” Diaz said in a statement.  She’s reportedly leaving KCBS to pursue a producing career.

A Los Angeles native, Garcia joined KCAL in 2009 after 22 years with KTTV.  He will continue to co-anchor KCAL’s 8 and 10 p.m. newscasts in addition to his new role as 6 p.m. anchor for KCBS.

“As he approaches his 25th anniversary on Los Angeles television next year, it is clear that Rick Garcia has played a major role in the growth and success of KCAL’s primetime newscasts,” said Steve Mauldin, president and general manager of KCBS and KCAL, in announcing the move.  “We are extremely pleased to recognize Rick’s importance to our stations and the communities we serve by expanding his responsibilities to include anchoring CBS 2’s 6 p.m. newscast.”

WKMG Anchor Laura Diaz: ‘I’m Too Down-to-Earth to Be an On-Air Personality’

Anchor Laura Diaz, who has been with Orlando’s WKMG since 2007, announced this week that she’s leaving TV, citing the emotional toll that the job has taken.

“I don’t think I can do television anymore,” Diaz told the Orlando Sentinel. “It’s just a lot of pressure. I got into it young. I moved up quickly. It’s really a tough job to do. You have to have a certain thick skin.”

Diaz, 28, began her TV career with KTVE-KARD in Monroe, LA, where she anchored the evening news before moving to her hometown of Orlando and WKMG. She currently anchors the CBS-affiliate’s weekday morning newscast.

“Being on the air every day is getting to me,” Diaz said. “I’m too down-to-earth to be an on-air personality. There’s a lot of wondering in my mind and heart. I don’t want to wait another 10 years and be too far in my career to make a switch.”

Matt Austin Joins WKMG’s Morning Newscast

WKMG‘s morning news team has added a new member. Matt Austin, a Florida native, is joining the Orlando CBS-affiliate’s morning newscast, where he’ll work alongside Laura Diaz at the anchor desk.

Austin comes to WKMG after serving as a morning anchor for Oklahoma City’s KOKH.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have Matt help wake up Central Florida,” said Skip Valet, WKMG’s vice president and general manager, in announcing the hiring. “His knowledge of our community, his passion for the news and his love of mornings make him the perfect addition to our dynamic team.”

Austin says that he’s excited to return to Florida, where he was born and where he attended college at Florida State University: “This is truly a dream job for me.” Read more
