After KSL Drops ‘Hannibal’ One Competitor Laughs While Another Looks to Profit

After Salt Lake City NBC affiliate KSL passed on airing the NBC series “Hannibal,” saying it was too graphic, one local competitor stands to profit from that decision while another is poking fun at the Mormon owned station.

When KSL announced it wasn’t going to air “Hannibal,” CW affiliate KUCW stepped in and added the show to its programming just as it did last Fall with NBC’s “The New Normal” and “Saturday Night Live” years ago.

TVSpy asked KUCW general manager Richard Doutre’Jones about the move. “Our relationship is with NBC,” said Doutre’Jones, who is also general manager of ABC affiliate KTVX. “I believe we have a real benefit airing the NBC programming not cleared by KSL on Utah’s CW30…it raises the profile and viewer awareness for the station and they also provide additional revenue opportunities.” Read more

KTVX-KUCW News Director, Assistant News Director Let Go

News director Larry Perret and assistant news director Leesa Dillon have been let go at KTVX-KUCW, Nexstar’s duopoly in Salt Lake City, TVSpy has learned.

“I wish them both the very best in their future endeavors,” KTVX-KUCW general manager Richard Doutre’Jones told TVSpy in an email.

The stations were purchased in July by Nexstar Broadcasting. In December, about 15 employees, including station manager Matt Jaquint, were laid off. Doutre’Jones took over as general manager last month.

Dillion and Perret had both worked at the station since May 2011.

Richard Doutre’Jones Named GM at Salt Lake City’s KTVX-KUCW

Nexstar Broadcasting has named Richard Doutre’Jones vice president and general manager of KTVX and KUCW, the ABC and CW affiliates in Salt Lake City.

Doutre’Jones spent 18 years at KBHK (now KBCW) in San Francisco, working as a local and national sales manager, general sales manager and station manager. In 2001, he moved to San Diego, where he became VP-GM of XETV-XDTV.  Most recently, he has served as the vice president of Jones Broadcast group while also operating RDJ Global, providing consulting and M&A advisory services to broadcast and other companies.

“With his depth of local broadcasting expertise, strong client relationships, and dedication to the local Salt Lake community, we are confident that Richard is the ideal person to lead the television and e-media operations of KTVX and KUCW,” Nexstar COO Brian Jones said in a statement.

Doutre’Jones replaces Matt Jaquint at the stations. KTVX-KUCW underwent a round of layoffs before Christmas.
